REVIEW: Detailers Paradise Starter Bundle Produtcs (Epic, Slick, Clarity, etc.)

Author's Note: this is more an article than a friendly forum post, but I hope people here will find this helpful. Sorry for the lack of photos - it's been a rainy few weeks and capturing the full shine of the car has been challenging - I'll supplement this as I shoot more.

+++++++

Like many, I was clueless about taking care of my car for many years. Protect the finish? Me? Um… sure, I did. I washed the car at least once a month. OK, maybe every other month. And I tossed the Burger King bags out of the rear seat at least quarterly, more in the summertime when the heat made the ketchup and stale fries residue smell like low tide in Baltimore.

So, when I finally bought my “big boy’s car”, a 2006 MINI Cooper S convertible, it came as somewhat of a shock to me that I found myself in possession of… strange feelings. A desire to wash my car. To keep it looking shiny and clean at all times. To be able to see my reflection in my gorgeous hot orange paint.

Like many, I spent those first few months roaming the isles at my local Wal-Mart, Target and Pep Boys, buying up all I could find in the Meguiar’s “consumer” line, from detail spray to Gold Class carnauba-based natural wax to plastic trim dressing.

But, it wasn’t until I tried the line of products from Detailers Paradise that I felt like I really had “arrived” if you will into my zen-like happy-place of car care nirvana. As I will try to show, keeping your car doesn’t take a boat-load of crushingly expensive products; all it takes is a few key chemicals and a bit of patience to achieve great results.

My journey began simply enough: with a clean car, freshly washed with degreasing car shampoo (“classic” blue Dawn dish soap in my case). I had used a Porter Cable random-orbital polisher on the finish a few months before, and regular sessions with Meguiar’s external detailing spray and Gold Class wax had kept the finish reasonably shiny and scratch-free, but I was tiring rapidly of the way that the Gold Class needed to be re-applied so quickly (in some cases, the Gold Class would begin to exhibit diminished slickness after a single week or two).

I began with Epic, Detailers Paradise synthetic wax, applied with a ultra-fine grade waxing pad attached to a Porter Cable device. Detailers Paradise recommends using a mechanical application process with the Epic, since only a small amount of product should be used applied in a thin, even coat (only about 2 teaspoons for the entire car). I could have done this by hand, and did so, in fact, on the front and rear bumpers, as my polisher was too large to easily get into all the nooks and crannies there, but doing the entire car in this manner would have been far more difficult.

As per instructions, I waited for about an hour for the wax to “cure” on the paint, then buffed the residue off by hand with one of Detailers Paradise’s unparalleled “Monster Fluffy” microfiber cloths. (I feel I should pause here to say a few words about these fine, fine cloths: “superduperincredible” and “amazingsoftawesome” spring to mind… really, they’re hands-down the best cloths for car care I’ve ever used.) The dried residue came away with little effort, revealing an incredibly smooth surface beneath.

To give you an idea of just how slick the treated surface was: a plastic bottle literally skated, like an air-hockey puck, across the waxed hood when I set it down on the car after final polish. Following suggestions on the bottle and reinforced by threads on NorthAmericanMotoring.com, I allowed the wax to cure for an additional 24 hours before applying a second coat, this time by hand. After a second coating, the paint was even smoother (I wouldn’t have thought it was even possible), basically refusing to offer even slight resistance to a clean polishing cloth.

Paint waxed, I turned to the MINI’s infamously-difficult-to-keep-clean black plastic trim. Detailers Paradise sent along something called Wizards Black Renew for the exterior trim. This thick white solution, applied with either a microfiber applicator pad or with a simple terry towel, restored my black trim to a deep, lustrous black without the unattractive “wet” look that some products can impart.

On the interior, I used a combination of Nero plastic trim dressing and Clarity, their non-ammonia glass cleaner on a specially-designed glass microfiber cloth. The interior has never looked better and the Clarity glass cleaner is easily the best product of its type I’ve ever used, head-and-shoulders easier to work with than Stoner’s Invisible Glass or simple Windex, evaporating without a single streak or fleck of residue. The Clarity spray is safe for tinted windows, as it is water-based. The Nero was sprayed on a cloth and used basically like a dusting spray on the dash and other interior surfaces, and left the dash with a “new car” satin finish, not greasy or shiny like Armor All.

So, my car looked fantastic, but Fall was well underway, with all the accompanying rain, leaves, grime and other road hazards I’ve come to expect from late September to early November in Ohio. Experience has shown me that even in relatively tame conditions the carnauba-based natural wax I was accustomed to working with would break down in a few short weeks – how would Epic do in such a harsh environment?

I’m happy to report that even after several weeks of harsh treatment, the Epic-treated surface still polishes up mirror-smooth after a few spritzes of Detailers Paradise’s Slick detailing spray and a quick buff with a Monster Fluffy towel. It’s almost uncanny – the surface still feels as smooth as it did on the day I waxed it. Plus, the Slick smells really wonderful – like a tropical drink. Better, the black trim, which would become streaked after a rain or two when treated with Meguiar’s plastic and vinyl trim sauce still looks even and clean after treatment with the Wizards Black Renew, once the concealing road grime is lifted away with a quick swipe of Slick.

The mirror-like reflection of the Jack-o-Lantern on the bonnet is the result of a quick swipe of Slick followed by a buff with a soft, 100% cotton towel. The Epic wax was applied almost five weeks ago now, and has endured multiple rain storms and daily parking outside in the rain during daylight hours... impressive

Conclusion: With just a few simple products, both enthusiasts as well as beginners like myself can get really amazing results. I can’t wait for Detailers Paradise to release new products (as I write this, I’ve just learned that they’ve put out a new clay bar paint cleaner, for instance). When they do, I’ll be amongst the first to try them out. Congrats Detailers Paradise for such an amazing series of products.

Tested products:

Epic synthetic wax
Slick detailing spray
Clarity glass cleaner
Wizards Black Renew exterior trim cleaner/conditioner
Nero interior cleaner/conditioner
Monster Fluffy microfiber cloth (for exterior paint final polish)
Gray microfiber detailing cloth (for interior detailing use)
Microfiber applicator pads (for hand wax application)
Glass-cleaning microfiber cloth

Products I’ll be looking forward to testing this Spring:

Mystique car wash
Prima Clay clay bar
Swirl polishing compound (on a Porter Cable random-orbital polisher)
Amigo paint sealant (used after claying but before wax application to protect the clear coat form contamination)

Pros: Extremely durable. Leaves paint almost supernaturally smooth, even after weeks of rain and grime on my daily driver. Exterior trim cleaner/conditioner does not wash off, even after repeated rains. Detailed application instructions leave nothing to chance – even the greenest newbie will have no issues orienting themselves. Only a minimum of product needs to be used for best results.

Cons: Detailers Paradise is in Colorado, so I have to mail-order everything and can’t wander the aisles, browsing (I’m sure my wife, however, would see that as a “Pro”). Product bottles are colorful and attractive (targeted at women, perhaps? Hmmm...), but feel a bit flimsy - I'm forever re-tightening the spritzer trigger peice on my Slick, I'm sorry to say. Pretty nit-picky, I know, but... Last, Detailers Paradise products are not exactly “cheap” (the Starter Bundle listed on their web site goes for about $32), but this is compensated for by the products’ relatively strong concentration and the fact that only minimal amounts need to be applied in any given session. Bottom line: you get what you pay for.

nice write up.

I am a fortunate one, I can go visit their state of the art store any time I want, hehe.

Their store is as cool as their products.

Very nice write-up Matt!
Believe me when I say that not being able to walk their store is a real monetary pro - not a con! I can't get out of there without spending money. I'm looking forward to your impressions of Mystique (car shampoo) and Amigo since I've used both. I have not needed the Swirl as of yet since I believe it is a little more aggressive than Amigo.
Again, nice work on the review!

Thanks ImagoX for such a thorough review!

We too are sad that not everyone can come by the store in person... it's much more fun for us too! You're right though... spouses who are not so car-care-inclined don't like as all that much.

Just a quick note regarding the spritzer re-tightening. I agree... the spritzer caps do loosen too easily and we're working to fix this issue. It's proving difficult to find a sprayer with: a good mist, the correct threading for the bottle, good tightening, strong durability, etc all in the same sprayer! But, we are working on it.

Colorful and attractive to just the ladies?? Interesting point no doubt, but the color and shine draw everyone directly to the Prima corner of the store as soon as they walk in. It's like a Prima tractor beam...

Thanks again for the review!

Just some clarification regarding Amigo...

Although you do use Amigo right before you wax, Amigo is not a sealant. Amigo is an unusual combination of things... it's a paint cleanser, filler/concealer, and super-super-fine polish, all in a polymer base. Because it's so different, I'll explain in more detail...

The polymer base allows you to top it with a wax- synthetic/sealant or carnauba. The polymer in this case does not really act as a durable protective sealant like a true paint sealant/synthetic wax. We advise that you wax after using Amigo for full protection and durability. In other words, you can wax after Amigo without bonding issues. (many other glazes or glaze-like products cannot be topped with a wax due to bonding issues)

The super-super-fine polish is so fine that it is almost unmentionable. In most cases, the fine abrasives simply help to "muscle up" the paint cleansers and make them that much more effective. In most cases, it is not coarse enough to actually abrade the paint. The exception to this is when Amigo is paired with an aggressive pad, such as the orange or yellow pad (using our/Lake Country pad system). Paired with aggressive pads and the PCDA (or a rotary), Amigo can offer some fine level abrading.

The fillers/concealers in Amigo help to temporarily conceal and fill slight imperfections like light scratches or fine swirls. In filling these areas, it has somewhat of a leveling effect... leaving the surface even and level for your wax application.

The paint cleansers help remove oxidation, grime, environmental gunk buildup, etc. This aspect of Amigo is important pre-wax for two reasons: appearance and durability. As always, better prep, better wax!

Amigo's super-fine abrasives and cleansers work best when Amigo is applied/worked with a PCDA (in most cases, with a light finishing or polishing pad).
All of the other traits of Amigo (as well as much of the cleanser trait) can be easily attained with equal results with either the PCDA or hand application.

Amigo is unique, and thus easily confused!

Bottom line: Use Amigo right before you wax for a noticable improvement in your wax, and thus your paint.

You can visit the website for a full description:
Prima Amigo

Hope this helps!

See - that's why I didn't REVIEW it... because, you know, I didn't USE it.

But now I really want to.

LOL....fortunately, my wife is OK with the detailing of our cars...as long as I keep her Tacoma as nice as my daily driver and my MINI. She loves it when the paint is soooooo smooth, it almost feels soft.

and you are right, the color attracts you to that part of your store. I made it around that stand and was like "WOW"....if that stuff does half as good a job as it looks, then I will be set. Currently, I am almost done detailing my Subaru daily driver...which was in serious need of detailing. The Epic went on very smooth, wet almost and went a long way with the black buff pad. I like it much better than the 4star or the Klasse stuff I am used to putting on my cars. After it sets for a moment, I am gonna buff it off and see how that goes, but so far, I am thrilled!!!

This is what I picked up yesterday...soooo pretty, so shiny, and so much matches the color of my car ....gotta love bottles that look like your car

That's the way to do it... just make sure the spouse's car is also detailed! Getting them to feel how smooth it is really seems to get them on board.

Make sure you let the Epic dry for 35-45 minutes (or more) before you remove it. Glad to hear you like it so far!

I let it dry for a bit over an hour, and it came off easy. Helps that the garage is way warm due to the beautiful day we had today....and the windows in the garage door are letting that passive heat through. Must be over 80 degrees in there.

Anyway, the Epic came off wonderfully, and the car looks great. After clay, Swirl, and Epic, I am very happy with the car. Now just to get all the dog hair off the back seats

Just wanted to make sure! When you said, "After it sets for a moment," I wanted to make sure you remembered to let it do so longer than a moment. I know, I know... I should just have more faith in you than that!

Nick didn't give you a "Sticky Sheet" to try on your back seats?? I'm going to have to reprimand him for that. Next time you swing by, ask for the Sticky Sheet. We'll give you a free sample to try. It's like a massive sheet of sticky tape... specifically for dog hair on large areas!

It is so hot and nice out today! I only managed to get outside once with the hounds today, but it was verrry nice.

great review ImagoX. I just got some Monster Fluffies, a bottle of Epic, some applicators and some waffle weave towels. I'm excited to try the Epic one of these upcoming weekends and now wish I had just ordered the starter kit! All of the other products sound great, too. That's okay, I'll pace myself. Thanks again for the writeup.

p.s. - i know you have to keep the Epic away from the black trim... did you mask it off with painter's tape the way your pictures from a while back showed? I did that on my first wax with Meguiars, but i'm still finding little traces of white wax residue every once in a while... guess i was a sloppy taper.

I masked the trim with 2" painter's tape when I applied with the Porter Cable, yes, but didn't bother when I applied by hand (although if I were ONLY doing coats be hand, I would). Honestly, it only takes about 15 minutes to mask all the trim, which is about 1/5 the time it takes to get cured wax residue off the trim. I found this GREEN painter's tape at Rousch Hardware that was only like $2.50 a roll, so I recommend taping everything off - it's just easier and, being the lazy slob I am, I'm all abuot making things as easy for myself as possible.

That or have the trim painted. I

You were going to put it on after the epic if I remember correctly. Next time if you tell me the order, I will try and help you remember.

Wanna test it on the bourbon?

That place was impressive to say the least. I walked in and Nick stated "must be MINI day! You are about the 3rd or 4th one here today!" Granted, I can go almost whole weeks without seeing another MINI sometimes on the road, yet they are all attracted like moths to the flame to detailers paradise!!

I put my second coat of Epic on today. I now feel like I can sleep at night. Ha!

Just in time for a rainstorm that's heading this way...according to the news, anyway.

i tried out the DP platinum MF towels (gray color ones) for detailing
this morning after my drive.

The towel is very well packaged in a ziplock type bag. Upon opening it
i noticed that it had a lot of lint on it, shook the towel abruptly a couple
of times and got lint all over my jacket. i think they make this out
of cats or something. jk

Other than the initial lint (which you can prevent getting on your car
if you shake the towel abruptly or wash it once) the towel is nice and
fluffy, no wash tags, etc. very nice. there is a short hair side and
a long hair side so very versatile.

it's a lot softer than the Griot's wax/polish removal towels making it
perfect for detailing imho. oh, if you have any rough
spots (burrs) on your metal license plate holder the MF will kind of
leave hairs on it so becareful... it doesn't really hurt anything but
just another thing to watch out for, i guess.
