Repairing Paint Chips
Repairing Paint Chips
Over the last year and 16,000+ miles we've picked up several little paint chips. We've got spots on the PW bonnet and B roof. Nothing real serious. What's the best way to repair these paint chips.
So touch up paint? Vendor?
Technique?
I don't want to apply touch up paint and then end up with a spotted Mini.
Thanks in Advance,
Jeff

Langka is a great product for nice round stone chips. If they are more like scratches, I've found that touch-up paint and wet-sanding works better (but wet sanding can be a bit touchy, so I recommend practicing on a car you don't care about, an old junker body panel or have a professional do it).
With Langka, you basically apply a 'blob' of touch-up paint and let dry a bit. The Langka then selectively 'melts' the 'blob', hopefully leaving you with a smooth, flush touch-up that is ready for polishing and sealing/waxing. It takes a bit of practice to get right, but the good thing is that it isn't destructive to well-cured (over 1 month) paint, so if you screw up, you are pretty safe.

I just ordered some to see how this works out for my many nasty paintchips. My friend let a paintchip go unattended and is now rusting there, the piece between the hood and the windshild (where the vents are), not good...

The little micro paintbrushes that Langka sells are also excellent!
For your friend, he/she may want to look into the fiberglass pens (Langka might sell 'em). They are a small bundle of fiberglass that is held in a plastic sheath. You use the glass fibers as a tiny scrubber to get the wax, dirt and rust out of stone chips before filling 'em in.

That is a good idea, thank you. I will let him know if he decides to fix it... I dont understand his thought process sometime.

I also had lots of small rock chips on my aerokit and front bumper. I called the dealer and ordered a factory paint touchup kit. It came by mail in less than 2 days. It believe it was $35 dollars and included a paint and clearcoat tube. The paint's lid has a small brush on it ideal for rock touchups, etc. I also used toothpics to apply the paint to the smaller rock chips. Everything looks great now and I still have 95% of the paint left for next year's touchups.
touch up paint works great with the pepper white, i touched up my bumper and it looked great after some wet sanding, the black roof on the other hand is a pain, it gets dull after wet sanding and you need to add the clear coat to it to make it look nice.
I used the Langka system on my chips; several 1/8" to 1/4" chips on the bonnet and grill area. The hardest part was just being patient enough to let the touch-up paint dry enough to begin. The actual Langka product was easy to use and did smooth out the paint blob flush with the original paint.
After I did the Langka I let the touch-up dry overnight and then did Zaino's Z-PC until the chip was invisible.
I can honestly recommend this product and was pleased with the results.

Any photos of the end results would be greatly appreciated.
Got my first chip today on the bonnet (down to the metal, too, quite a clash with Astro Black!) and am thinking about using Langka. I picked up the factory paint kit @ the dealer ($16) but am weighing my options.
Thanks everyone!

I have about 6 chips, 4 on the bonnet, 2 on the boot. If you use touch-up paint from Mini, what is the point of the Langka Paint Chip Repair Kit? From what Cooper99 says, the factory touch-up paint kit and some wet sandpaper is all I need.
What Langka recommends is to blob the touch-up paint on so it fills your entire chip. Then after it dries you use their product to smooth the blob out flush to your surrounding paint. So I filled in the chip with touch-up paint and then removed the excess flush to the finish. I don't think there is any doubt that you can do the same with sandpaper - I just did not want to go there.
I figured I can do more damage with an abrasive than a chemical that only removes touch-up paint so I went with Langka. If you feel comfortable with sandpaper on your finish then go for it.
