talking exterior here:
toothpaste . . . .
not gel
paste
mint is optional
you want a gentle rubbing compound .... that's toothpaste
you want a gentle abrasive to cut thru the crud and not damage the glass
on the other hand
I run over all my glass with a razor blade (window scraper) every few months. You'd be surprised what my blades pull off . . .
side bar: windshield wipers work WAY better on CLEAN glass ....

I just ordered Driven glass cleaner and will give it a shot. Everything out there has mixed reviews so I figured why not. Going to hit it with a Nanoskin fine sponge, then Driven, then Griot's Glass Sealant. The glass probably isn't as dirty as I think, but it's just never been a priority.

I have used this stuff, its really good, had water stains on house windows that would not come off ,grabbed my bottle and wow. After using it on a car the glass feels like it has been clayed. Get the 3" white pads that are for glass polishing and the manual, by hand holder. too.

So I did the front and back glass on both cars with the following process:
1) Nanoskin fine grade sponge with ONR as lube
2) Driven glass polish
3) Griots window cleaner
4) Griots glass sealant
Pretty decent results considering I had never done it before. Didn't remove every water spot, but definitely cleared up the windows. Noticed some small chips/pits in both windshields. Might give it a second go later and will also give it a shot on the side glass. New wipers all around. I've never been a detail freak but I do keep my cars pretty clean. Not too difficult to do once every few months. Took about 1.5 hours for both cars. Definitely worth the trouble.

I've got a question for you, Capt....
Would something like Meguiar's Ultimate compound work?
I've got microchips on the windshield I'd like to make less noticeable and have a bottle of that on my shelf to try.

Be VERY careful using any of these products on boats. Hatches and ports are usually a plastic derivitive, lexan. These may be coated as a protectant. ANY abrasive will cut through the protectant and remove it, therby rendering it useless. The hatch will look good almost perfect. However, what you will now need to do the remainder of the hatch's life is constantly remove salt, rain, water spots. You removed the sealer and the hatch will now stain easier.

rubbing compound will get rid of crud on the glass quickly
but to get rid of 'micro chips' ... you are asking the compound to rub the glass back to a smooth surface ... rub off the surface to the pit depth? Bad plan IMO.
I tried it on my 79 with special pads and compounds and gave up LONG b4 I had success . . .

I've seen a few machine w/compound videos. That's viable.
Heard the claybar method works too.
I cannot recommend it since I haven't tried it, but I've heard of using 0000 steel wool by hand on the windshield to polish it. I can't remember if you glass cleaner or other substance as a lube along with though

I really don't have a few weeks to dedicate to shaving a quarter of a millimeter or so off the glass.
