Windshield chip - repairable?

Darn, today I a large rock wacked my windshield and I don't think its repairable. Its about a dime size defect and when looking from the outside the only physical defect on the outside is a pin point chip and then it looks like the glass cracked on the inside. It sort of looks like a BB gun hole in glass but not through and through.

Is there any way to repair these types? I am doubtful because the outside of the glass is still smooth on the outside and the crack is almost between the glass.

Richard, you ALWAYS come through.

I did not realize there was a correct term for the type of crack. Is a "bullseye" chip like the kind I am talking about. I always assumed those repair kits were for a crack that the defect was from the outside. One that you could actually feel with your finger or finger nail. This one is not like that at all. Its mostly cracked from the inside out.

Thanks!
Kenny

Hey Kenny,

So I'm not certain, is your crack a bullseye crack or not?
Like mine? I was hit by some flying object (UFO, lol) on the freeway.

You can definitely make it less visible to the point it doesn't bother you anymore.

Hrm, I guess I don't know... Its completely smooth on the outside of the defect. Its not a crack, its size is a little less than a dime. It does not have a "crack" of any length yet.

Is a bullseye crack rough on the outside like a divot of glass was actually removed or is it more of an impact to the glass which then propogates inward between the two halves of glass?

Lasly, I have a very (very very) small hole where the impact was. Possibly the resin flows through this hole and into the defect in between the glass halves?

I am sure a picture is warranted.

I have no answer, sorry. But why has no one developed a clear bra type of material for a windshield? Optics should not be an issue if it were installed right. Look at the multiple tear off shields on open wheel race car(formula1, Indy car) driver face shields.

Now that would be a GREAT mod

Mine was smooth on the outside except for a tiny chip at the impact point. On the inside, it was also smooth.

As for your question, the only bullseye cracks I've seen were like your second assumption

"more of an impact to the glass which then propogates inward between the two halves of glass?"

If there is a crack, a windshield glass repair shop will want to know if the crack is all the way through or not. If it's subsurface meaning the crack only goes through one side, its not possible to fix it easily. Cracks that go all the way through are drilled at the ends of the crack--well a little ahead of the crack so that the spreading can be stopped.

Perfect, then it sounds like I have a bullseye crack and its going to be visually repairable. Thanks for the great information!

People have tried to market them. There was a NAM vendor doing that a few years ago. Don't know if anyone ever tried it. The problm is that they are usually only applied to the top window edge and cracks can happen anywhere.

I would think the problem about a film for the general public would be one that doesn't get scratched or marred by windshield wipers when it rains or snows, etc... I just don't think it would be very practical.

I recently got a chance to see a clear bra film applied to an entire bonnet and it looked pretty bad. It looked like the paint was smudged like brush strokes in the paint.

Yeah, kind of what I was thinking, wipers, and even though it went on clear, it would cloud up with scratches and such pretty fast, but I can dream can't I

I too have seen some bad clear bra applications. Also seeing some older applications with chips right through them, they look horrible.
