Thank goodness for Dynamic Stability Control

I think it was on my whole ride to work this morning (only 1 mile).

I sense humor and or sarcasm.

Really, if you have the experience and winter driving skills you can get around fine with a '74 GMC pickup truck in this stuff. No 4WD, no ABS, no DSC and whatnot. Not so much as a locking rear differential, mind you. Find a big empty unplowed parking lot and practice, practice, practice.

I was loving my drive in this morning. LSD is sweet even when you aren't on the track. Didn't try out the ABS or the DSC....I don't need to mess up my nice new car, thanks.

Just don't forget, the laws of physics over rule DSC.
ABS, DSC are all wonderful tools. As well as the proper tires
I think that is why we see so many SUVs in ditches and rear ending people.
A false sense of security.

I had no problems going in this morning in my little "Just A Cooper" with 15 inch stock Conti tires and no DSC. Seven miles to work. Some of it on untreated roads. She did really well. What you have to watch out for is the folks in the SUV's who think just because they have four/all wheel drive they can still go 50 MPH!

I decided to not go anywhere as driving home last night my neighborhood was a sheet of ice. Good thing I can work from home, eh?

FYI, DSC is always on unless you turn it off.

well, to clarify, I didn't "use" DSC because I didn't push the car into any kind of a slide. It wasn't disabled.

I think I was using LSD and possibly ATC (is that the right acronym? traction control is what I'm reaching for) this morning when starting out in slushy parts.

ATC = DSC for the most part.

I think on Mini's you either have DSC or ASC... With DSC being a premium/sport option I believe.

For the R50/R52/R53:

Standard on MC = Nothing
Standard on MCS = ASC+T
Optional on MC and MCS = DSC

ASC+T = Automatic Stability Control + Traction
DSC = Dynamic Stability Control

DSC = ASC+T... plus more.

The "more" is good stuff - yaw control, primarily. Always worth having in any kind of hazardous conditions. What most people complain about is ASC+T. It can be helpful but it can also be a PITA, especially during aggressive acceleration, where the slightest wheelspin will make it cut engine power. You can't avoid having ASC+T on your car though, if you buy an MCS. It's standard. You can however make the system more useful (and safer) by opting for the DSC upgrade.
