Fed up with the weather
I can't be the only one fed up with the weather.
Our power went out Sunday for 5 hours, generator on. No power, no sump pump, BIG problems.

Yup, sick of rain. BUT, I discovered something about my MINI. I've had to drive with the top up for a couple days and I can hear the rasp of the exhaust better with the top up! Sounds pretty cool. Tonight on the way home I folded one of the back seats forward too. Vroom!

Seriously though, sorry to hear of your house problems. I guess I should be very relieved that I live in a place that has been trouble-free, both power and water-wise.
I hadn't heard about the DC garage car totaling... but I would be curious to know more (if only for fascination reasons - imagining a "swimming pool" parking lot underground).

it's like being in a freakin' hurricane. The rain has been astronomical...buckets and buckets and buckets!
We've just lost power for the 2nd time in 24 hours, but our backup generator is chugging away, hence we're watching TV as I post this.
We blew out 2 surge protectors yesterday, but they saved about $10,000 worth of electronics.
I managed to get out and do errands during the break this AM..made it back just in time before the the heavens opened again.
So far all our roads are clear..but Paul's commute to DC took 3 times longer than normal...
Wait til a real hurricane comes...

I wish we could send some this to the drought striken areas..especially the southwest. We actually had a deficit here, but I'm sure it's been erased by now...

And because I leave for work so early, my commute into work hasn't been affected... But when I leave at about 4:30, it's been taking about 3 times normal. 90 minutes to go 19 miles.
Same down here in Richmond. I smoked some barbeque yesterday and it was seriously a PITA trying to keep the temperature steady when the rain was varying from a light drizzle to monsoon-like downpour.
At about 3PM yesterday I had a nice creek running through my backyard!
That didn't even happen during Isabel!!

Despite all the problems associated with rain - flooding (got caught on 110 as they were closing a section of it late Monday night), our garden is completely dead, one of our little retaining walls is sort of failing etc - I have always loved the sound of rain and thunderstorms. So I have not really minded the rain - it's all the other stuff that comes with it.
We are starting to build our ark if anyone wants to sign up for a spot.

I've got room enough for about three aboard s/v Toyot for a long term voyage if necessary... First dibs for available berths will be given to single unattached females I'm afraid.

Ok, so I have lived throught the first go round in the "Plywood State" when we had the gee..how many freakn stroms went through that summer, 4 or 6 in a 4 week period, CRAPPY... I've been in worst than this here, but of course Fl is used to this kind of heavy downpour and there aren't really 'hills' that have mudslides that close down the beltway!
They just get HUGE sinkholes in the middle of I4!
I also grew up here, and don't ever remember it being this bad! I've seen people being washed away in their cars!
And to think that a little rain can shut down Washington DC? Gee did someone plan this??
But I am sure glad to see the sun shine today. Cause at work it has SUCKED!! The rain has been so bad, one of our labor rooms celing collapsed...thank god we got the woman out in time!! (there is a balcony above that room that was flooded so badly....) and because of that little flood, two of our walls have caved in..Hummm Sibley has been doing some construction today let me tell you! Contractors were already in the room at 0600 this morning putting up drywall. Gotta have that labor room!
And I thought I was gonna have an easy night at work....

So, why is this rain such a problem for you in the DC area? What I saw on the news was a report of a TOTAL of 6+ inches of rain in areas. ......Out here in the MW a decent thunderstorm dumps that much in 1 HOUR. Is it the run-off from the surrounding "mountains" Is it that all the water is running to the sea? Is it just poor drainage infrastructure? Help a mid-westerner understand what the problem is...

Asking for a little patience for DC and Northeast
First, let me say that I lived in WY during my high school & formative driving years so I roll my eyes when everything starts closing in the winter...then I smile because I know I can have some fun motoring safely.
In addition to the soil, folks forget that WDC is built in what was a swampy area that still has lots of water underground. Alot of the area in the WDC proper is below sea level, so parts of it floods when we get billions of gallons of water dumped on us in a few days.
I used to work in one of the Govt buildings that is closed and now work a few blocks away. 5+ feet of water in the parking garage almost non-stop since the weekend definitely flooded some cars. The electricity had to be turned off that long as well. I'm sure you've been watching the news with the photos and coverage of what happened in the houses that flooded. Just imagine that in office buildings large enough for 2,000+ workers.
But, the business resumption plans launched Monday morning. Everyone's been sorting out who's working where and bringing systems back up ASAP to ensure the business of government doesn't stop. As goofy as it sounds, one of the top priorities is to support our troops regardless of which agency work.
Alot of my co-workers/friends still work there. Think about all the stuff you have where you work --- not just the work stuff but the personal stuff like photos & drawings by your kids or grandkids that you have not been able to retrieve.
Enough said. My MINI & Subaru are just fine. My house continues to be dry (knock on wood) and my two dogs are feeling a little cabin fever, but fine.
