Summer:ice cream, Winter:???
Summer:ice cream, Winter:???
I've been trying to think of something DCMM can do during the winter to keep warm. In the summer we did an ice cream run to keep cool, but what is the opposite equivalent?
If we were in Chicago or San Fran, I'd say a run to Ghirardelli's chocolate shop for some fresh hot chocolate... But there's none in the DC Metro area, nor any other good chocolateers, eh?
Maybe a nice 'big' mom & pop coffee house? I know of a few in SoCal, but almost none in DC Metro either? All business/power consumer Caribou & Starbucks pretty much. I don't think there's any hot cider houses either.
So what then? Any ideas on a 'warm' place to get together sometime this winter? Would need to be big enough for anyone who wanted to go, so little hole & the walls are pretty much a no-go for an event, unless there's a larger warm retreat nearby.
But if you know of an awesome hole-in-the-wall joint, you can share it anyhow so that some of us might visit on our own.

Lots of folks also recommend any really good Mexican restaurant for hot chocolate. The hot chocolate here in Punta Mita is pretty darn good. This is one place I heard about in DC
Oyamel in Crystal City for authentic Mexican-style hot chocolate with hints of cinnamon-served in a pottery pitcher with the wooden stirrer (molinillo)
Or we could head to a tea house

Jen,
Actually, there's Jammin' Java in Vienna. It's a mom & pop coffee house with a small music section. They have a large show area in back. They often have bands, comedians... etc. there.
It might make a great meeting place. The only possible issue might be parking, the lots will need to be scoped out.

The antithesis of an ice cream run would be to find a nice cold night, snow (lots of it), a huge roaring fire, Big Screen TV, A great Movie ... Wait .... hmm.
That almost sound like when Santa comes to town ...
Or a Ski Lodge in the Poconos ...
Actually it sounds exactly like the Lobby of the Paradise Inn at Ranier

We will have a special visitor (actually two) coming into town late next week... stay tuned... it'd be cool to have a get together for them - possibly combined with this, possibly as a separate happy hour event...
I have off work tomorrow, and plan on cris-crossing DC running errands. I'll see about finding a place with a good amount of room, and a big parking lot!
(And I'll take a peek at Jammin' Java, too!)

Ice skating in DC.
There's also the neat Ice Skating rink down on the Mall amidst the Smithsonian. Last winter when I was down they had seriously upgraded the food service set up there. Fun to watch even if you don't skate. And they had hot chocolate.

Paul,
Just wondering how your scouting went. I drove through Vienna tonight and passed Jammin Java, the parking lot was larger than I remembered, so I'm confident we can fit several thousand.... uh, 20 to 30 MINII into it.
