Spring / summer event ideas

Hey all,

I was meandering around the internet when I came across this site:

http://www.bengies.com/

It's a drive-in movie theatre around Baltimore. I think that it'd be a blast to do this as a DCMM event! Maybe have a late afternoon or twilight drive, then all of us wind down the night at the drive-in!

Anyone game?

We tried this two years ago... Trouble was it rained that day.... HARD! Only 5 people ventured up there because traffic was so bad. Took people 2 hours plus to get up there from DC that day...

However, if the weather cooperates that would be a neat event...

My Idea (Paul Hope You Don't Mind)

Also have an idea for a spring/summer event. Paul hope you don't mind me posting my idea here. This is for when the weather is warmer. Most people don't like eating ice cream when its cold out. This is just more of a meet and not as much as a run as Paul's idea was. Place in Manassas VA called Nathans Diary Bar (Currently Employed Here) and we should be open by the end of March. Just an idea to get everyone together and enjoy the weather and also enjoy a treat. If anyone wants to know just give me a shout.

Once again Paul, hope you don't mind me posting my idea. Figured I might as well get it out now before its to late!

I like both these ideas. I'd love to do a drive in. There is also one out in Winchester, which might be a nice drive to get to.

I am working with folks on driving events for March, April and May of this year. We also are finalizing plans for Tech Day #3 in early April. Stay tuned for details.

I'd love to plan the Drive in for early June - Paul you have just be elected to select a date and get back in touch with me and we will set it all up.

Let's try for an ice cream night in late June or early July - up for planning it Matt?? Just give me a date that works.

We have talked about this before. I'd totally be up for it. But, we'd need to go on a weekend, as getting to Baltimore on a Friday afternoon would just suck!

Hey Mike are you checking your e-mail? I've sent you two and haven't gotten a response... Sending them to the DCCMM Board group...

I think somebody had posted (maybe on MINI2) about doing a Five Guys burger run in Woodbridge or something a long while ago. Maybe combine that with a Carl's Ice Cream (F'burg) stop .

We got stuck on this one planning a route with interesting roads. But, this is the sort of event we could do with the River City folks. Could you help set it up?

Yup, just let me know what you need me to do. We're meeting this Monday night and I can mention it then if you wish.

Please mention.

I can handle finding a starting point up here. And we have an end point. Just need help getting a route together and testing it.

Well, I didn't actually want to do anything!

I'll have to take a good look at the roads around both drive-ins. I was thinking for Baltimore, taking bits and pieces of the Roads & Rails run (was that close to Baltimore? I can't remember now! Does anyone have the route for that run (or any run around Baltimore) handy that they could upload?), but setting up something new around Winchester would be fun! That wouldn't be too far for the group, would it?

Anyway, I think that I'm heading to Asheville, NC for a weekend to meet old friends in June (and 10 bonus points to who can guess what's close by!), but I don't know which one. I'll try and find out which this weekend, and I'll get back to ya!

And I'm all about an ice cream trip!

I can help out with this. I'm not too far away from Woodbridge. It might be tough finding fun, unpopulated roads though. Unless, maybe the roads around Fountainhead Park are close by? Hmm, I'll have to look into that!

-Paul! (can't wait for spring!)

PS - Mike, how far is F'burg from you?

Fredericksburg is about an hour north of him.

It would not have to be anything very long. Perhaps just a 1/2 hour drive timed to arrive at the theatre about 1/2 hour before the shows start.

The one our by Winchester - at least I think this is near Winchester! is

Cool! Thanks for the link! I didn't realize that Winchester was that far North! Learn something new everyday! Anyway, it would be easy to design a short run around there. The Drive-In up there is located in Stephens City, Va, which is between Front Royal and Winchester (a bit closer to Winchester though).

Now, the million dollar question is, what would folks rather go to? Head about an hour and 15 minutes west of DC to Stephens City, or head about an hour northeast of DC to Baltimore? I'm not too familiar with Baltimore area, so I don't know if a decent drive is to be had out there. Any advice from Baltimore savvy folks?

My vote would be for West - I think less traffic that way?

If Front Royal is a stopping option, I've heard there is a KILLER burger place there....

I would say go west, young man... : )

Yea I can do this but I might need a little help. Once we open back up or I talk to my boss sometime soon I'll mention it to him. I'm sure he won't mind and don't worry there should be plenty of parking. And I'll get a list of prices to post once the time gets closer.

I vote for westward, as well. Better to wait until after Apple Flapple to go, though.

I'd like to make a run out west in VA too! Btw, I'm a brand new member ! I'll be picking up my little bundle of joy on Sunday from Sterling . I'd like to meet up with people and give my car a little excercise as soon as I can.

Okey dokey, in reference to the vote I requested about the east or west drive-in, I hereby declare poles closed! So without further ado, the results!

West: A bunch!
East: A pile of none!

So west it is! Good, I know from assisting in setting up the Smores trip the roads out there are fun! I'll start looking at a route as soon as the snow clears! And I'm still going to have to get back with a date. It'll be in June, just don't know exactly when.

I'll keep everyone posted!

And welcome Deanna! Try and get through that break-in quickly!

(Umm, 'Apple Flapple'?)

oops- my bad! I guess that does demand an explanation.

Apple Flapple: How the phrase "Apple Blossom Festival" was pronouced, through a slur, by a few inebriated Shenandoah University undergrads when they returned to their dorm after attending the festivities.

My sister was an RA her last 2 years there, and heard those words uttered while checking on some worse-for-wear revelers. The term stuck, and was used more widely the next year.

Not sure when Apple Flapple happens, but the town gets pretty crowded for the weekend of the festival.
___

Erinn and I spent about 7 or 8 hours on Sunday randomly motoring past Winchester, on a loop through the northeastern section of WV. We found a few fun new twisty roads to play on, but they may be further out than would suit, since Winchester will be the destination of this run, rather than the departure point. We did, however, locate another drive-in theatre, on rte. 11, south of Winchester (I think it was near Stephens City.) A sign out front said it was closed, but we didn't stop to figure out if that meant just for the season, or permanently.

The rte. 11 potato chip factory is on this stretch of highway, as well. 11 itself is not that exciting- but it does take you to a very good section of rte 55. Head westbound toward WV! Dunno how long that bit of motoring will be available in its current state; there is a massive highway construction project in progress for that section of rte. 55, and it looks like it'll be complete in a few years. WV rte. 9 and US 219 near the WV-MD border are also very good, but distant, choices.
