Exhaust law in VA?

Hey DCMMers,

I've been thinking about getting a new header and cat-back for my '05 MCS. I was just wondering if anyone knows if there are any restrictions on aftermarket exhausts in VA, like the tint restrictions? I mean I'm not looking for my car to be super loud with my exhaust system but I just wanted to know are there any sound level restrictions?

Anything not stock in VA is illegal! Now is it enforced? Rarely.

If you don't go to loud, you will be fine.

not true! I was pulled over twice last year. Good thing I had illegal tint too as the cop 'let me off' by ticketing me for that instead.

FYI...it tends to be the state police (and MWAA officers) that get sticks up their keister over exhaust. And, it only applies to cars...motorcycles can be 10x as loud and they don't ticket.

My bright orange miata has a strait pipe and no tickets, my freind has a quiet fart can and two tickets. the difference is he drives like a crazy and makes himself reall noticable to the cops so they just want to pull him over for watever. you should have no problems, just say its the stock sport package.

The other thing to keep in mind is passing emissions every other year (required in order to renew your vehicle registration).

Man, forget Virginia. I was born and raised in Lynchburg, and now I changed my residency to Florida because I was tired of dealing with Virginia's b.s. laws. My parents live in Forest now, so when I go home to visit, I love not being harrassed. Well, I still can get harrassed, but there's not a lot they can do.

most emissions testing is an OBDII scan, visible smoke and evap on the gas and under the hood. Gone are the days of the car being put on the dyno and sniffer (even then, a fully aftermarket and catted system can and will still pass, as long as there's no visual inspection).

Last time my Miata was in for emissions they had to bump it up to the RX-7 class to get it to pass.

I guess I keep forgetting that because I still have to get my Mustang to pass emissions every other year. It's a 1995 model - the last year before they added OBDII.

Ok guys, will my open top CAI pass VA emissions inspections? I'm not too worried about the exhaust emissions, but how about the visual?
