[Monday, July 21st] Phil Wicks MINI Driving Academy at VIR
thanks for the suggestions everyone.
GreenCactus - I had no idea you could buy them from him?! Any more details on that? The one I was looking at is about $149 and I think that's as cheap as it gets.

I didn't find any info on the website, but I called to register and he told me about it then. He said they buy so many they get a huge a discount.

That is good to know in case my Shoei RF-1000 doesn't meet their specs. It is a full face, DOT/Snell approved and I assume if it is good for a motorcycle it should be ok.

I have not decided just when I will be making the trip; my family’s farm is in Rustburg, VA, which is just out side of Lynchburg, which is Route 29. I may be going to the farm for the weekend and or to NC to visit friends first? And most likely will go to the farm Monday night.
I can tell you many different routes, back roads, etc.; however, I believe for most of us this is pretty much a destination ride; therefore, it is not just about the ride/run as it is about getting to the destination and enjoying the ride too.
I-95 no way; over to #81 out of the way and just the “slab”; Skyline/Blue Ridge great but for sure all day and slow. When ever I do go, I will be traveling #29, which does have some good scenery and somewhere between highway and back road twisty. If you do go #29 note: keep to speed limit starting at Madison until Ruckersville. This 10-12 mile patch of road is patrolled by the local Sheriff and State Trooper too. I travel #29 a few times each year and have for many years and it is rare if I don’t see “blue flashing lights” in this area; and yep I learned of this the hard $$ way. I think it is the same Sheriff still workin it. Depending on the time of day could get some traffic in the following areas: Manassas, Warrenton, for sure Charlottesville, there is a by-pass around Lynchburg now (don’t take #29 Bus into Madison Heights) and after Lynchburg less scenic. My brother lives in Annapolis and when he goes to the farm, he takes #29 too. I live in Alexandria.
Should I hook up with a group; a meet and kick off place could be the Cracker Barrel in Manassas just off #66 at the #234 N exit.
If you like wine, stop at Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery, which is about 5 miles north side of Madison; for a free short tour and tasting.
I booked a room at the Sleep Inn & Suites too, 2 nights, but may not stay Monday night.
Wow, way to much info……

They also stated our event packets will be mailed in about a week

All registered participants should now have received Phil's Event Information for VIR email sent out today.
Again, if you can make the tech inspection at the Sleep Inn the evening before, you'll be helping to make things move along a bit quicker the following morning at the track.

If You Need Numbers...
Now that our cars have been assigned numbers, here's a site with pretty decent prices and selection: soloperformance
About $20 for two pairs of numbers shipped to your door.

Oops, never mind
From the Solotime website:
Unless I'm mistaken, our speeds will be in excess of 100mph. I don't think they want magnetic numbers flying around the track!
Does anyone have know if Phil Wicks will allow magnetic #s?
It may be white shoe polish after all
Magnetic material is best suited for metal panels on cars used for low speed (less than 70mph) events.

I was thinking of putting the clingy vinyl ones on my rear side windows with a bit of clear tape to help them hang on. Of course, since I'm a slow guy with a justacooper, it probably won't be much of a problem for me. You fast folks with S cars will need all the extra adhesion you can get!
I'll be sure to wave as you blow by me in the straights!

Here's what I ended up doing for a number for the event at Summit Point a couple of months ago.
Since the magnetic printer sheets didn't work, we got a backup of printable window clings from Office Depot for $10 to $15 (?) for 10 sheets. Just stick the cling to the inside and there's no worry about it coming off in the wind or rain.
The pros are that you can print off any number in any funky font and it's very cheap.
The cons are that the printoffs are very see-through, not like our DCMM clings, and with our dark windows, the numbers really get washed out unless there's a good amount of light behind them.
In any case, I got away my number at Summit Point and Wicks seem less stringent than CDC so I think I'll just print off my new number and replace my beloved "8".

Yeah I was thinking of going the magnetic route, too (not the office depot magnetic paper). Any reason why this won't work? I've never seen those big magnetic bumper stickers and "ribbons" fly off of any cars.
I'm guessing the numbers can be on the side of the car OR the windows?

While the shoe polish might be the cheapest and easiest...Ambrosia is going to be used by two people that day (with 2 different numbers) which is why I'm looking for another solution!
I also asked about the helmets and was told they are selling open-face DOT approved helmets for only $50. I'm not sure if DOT approved means they are not also SA2005 approved.
Since I may want to attend autocross or track events in the future which might have more stringent helmet requirements, I'm guessing my best bet is to go and buy my own G-Force GF750 Open Face Helmet (SA2005 and SFI 31.1 Rated).

the helmets from phil wicks sound like quite a deal but I'm guessing they are ONLY dot approved.
