Oil light on after oil and filter change...

As soon as I rev above idle, the light goes out, and I have 4.7qts oil, but it's un nerving having the oil light on at all with the engine running. Apparently, the filter is a little more restrictive than the last. Did they ever offer an oil pressure sender that is rated a little lower? I'm sure I have sufficient oil, as the engine doesn't make any oil starving noises or behaviors. I'd rather get spit on than run with the oil light on, so, just begin! -Jeffy.

I would remove the filter and make sure it's installed properly. I have never had that happen with over 10 filter changes.

Did you get the OEM filter ? there were some going around that do not have the inside reinforcement and collapse under the oil pressure. Also check for leaks on the canister, If its seated properly.
Good Luck

Does either of you ever use aftermarket filters? Maybe I have to stick with original BMW filters- I have installed these correctly and have oil coming out of the oil service cap opening if I remove it while the engine is idling, so I have oil pressure despite the light. -Jeffy.

No, you have oil flow...

that's not the same thing as pressure. Take it all apart and see if there's anything wrong (like the collapse mentioned previously).

Get some of the OEM filters (they're about 8 bucks.... Real cheap!) and do it over again.

If you're really worried, get a pressure guage to see what's really happening, but this will be a pain to plumb....

Or you could try a new switch, but since it happened right after you changed your oil, I'd guess it's not that. Did you change viscosity?

Matt

I stuck with Mobil 1 10w30, and did install the perforated tube which keeps the filter from colapsing. My oil level remains the same and the engine temp is normal and performance is as good as always, so I'm not lacking oil. -Jeffy.

Put in a stock filter (no need to change the oil again, just break the seal on
the cannister and let the oil drain back into the engine) and see if the problem
goes away. It sure sounds like the engine is starving for oil when you raise
it above idle. Don't drive it like this unless you want to replace the motor.

Jeffy,
Make sure the plastic ring on the new filter is facing the botton of the filter canister. I have seen many of these installed upside down and will cause what you have described. The ring depresses the drain back valve which opens when the top is unscrewed. I would use either the factory filter or MANN HU816/1x filters.\

If the oil light is on you are damaging the engine by running it. Best get to the dealer asap.

Zippy, do you mean the plastic ring should face the open end of the canister, or the closed end? It's ridiculous to have to post this question, but the filters don't have fitment instructions and they're not fool-proof like good old spin-on filters like on any other car. It seems that you are the only one who understands my question, as everyone else thinks I'm running it with either no oil pressure, or none at speed. Above idle, the light goes out. At idle, I still have oil- it sprays onto my hand through the filler cap. Reguardless, I appreciate all people who have taken the time to respond to my question. Godspeed! -Jeffy.

Hello Jeffy,
I just took one apart so I would understand what you’re talking about. The flat rubber washer looking part will be showing when the cap is removed (open end of canister). That piece pushes on a spring loaded button when screwed in. The paper only side slides over the plastic cage.

The best thing to do is to take a good look at the old one as you remove it, and compare it to the new one, so that you know which way to orient it.

That didn't sound right...

I only meant you are fantastic for actually taking a filter off to check, K-Huevo... Later I realised that my reply could be mis-construed as something impure! Anyway, I went straight out and pulled the filter and found it upside down- this filter has rubber on both ends, but your description basically told me that the side with the small hole goes towards the engine! THE SIDE WITH THE SMALL HOLE GOES TOWARD THE ENGINE! Thanks to all for helping me solve this problem. K-Huevo is a good egg, but that's all I know about him- Honest! Have a fun weekend, Y'all! -Jeffy.
