K&N Typhoon Cold Air Intake

Looking for some comments\thoughts on the K&N Typhoon Cold Air Intake System - http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...Prod=69-2020TR. Is anybody out there currently running with one? If so, have you noticed any performance gains? How about the sound, any increase? Does it really only add 3.4 HP at the higher RPM range? Sorry for all of the questions but I have been looking into a way to add a little more HP to the non-S and possibly remove the small lag that occurs off the line.

Thanks!!

What year is your MC. The Typhoon won't fit '05+. I have the K&N 57i on my '05 MC. Sound is awesome, about 2mpg better gas mileage, and better throttle response. Can't tell you about HP gains as I refuse to waste money on a dyno run for very minimal gains.

CVT or 5sp? If it's a 5sp then you need the 57i, not sure about the CVT, the typhoon may work with the CVT.

MINI changed the tranny/motor mount for '05 when the switched to the Getrag 5sp, that's why the Typhoon won't fit.

You might look at the ITG CIA at MyMini. Unlike any of the K&N it has a shield to keep heat away which makes it much closer to being a true CIA which the K&N is not. I have the MyMini ITG and it's great. Good sound and a difference you can feel Much smoother through all the RPM's. Also the My Mini exhaust is a great combination with the CAI.

I have the K&N Typhoon CAI on my 2003 MCS. I love it, but I am not sure about the exact numbers on the hp increase...sounds faster, that's for sure!

I called K&N and was assured the Typhoon would fit the 05-06 MC. I know the mounts changed in 05...so I guess my question is are you sure the 57i is the correct intake for an 06 MC? Not that I'm doubting you...I actually trust you more than the person I talked to at K&N. Thanks in advance...........Tim

I have the 57i in my '05 MCc. I never actually nandled the typhoon, but the 57i is a tight fit. No rubbing, or antying but if the Typhoon is even slightly bigger it will become an issue. The 57i was a pleasant surprise. Better response, better drivability and better HP. The HP claim is based on the speed I am now able to achive going up a certain hill where I live. I am now able to accelerate continuosly instead of hitting a "wall". Even if the Typhoon fits, the HP/Torque difference should be negligible.

Ah shucks thanks. Checking their website, it shows the Typhoon SR (Short Ram) fits the '05-'06 MC. Either the info is wrong, or they changed the design enough to fit. I bought a Typhoon('02-'04) and had to return it, as it would not fit, so I ended up with the 57i. Neither of which are CAI anyway. I am going to look at the CAI from My Mini Parts.

Although I do like the sound of my K&N.

EDIT: I just looked at the install instructions for the Typhoon, http://www.kandn.com/instructions/69-2020.pdf, that'a a pre '05 car in the picture.

Thanks for all the info! I may go with the 57i just to be safe and after hearing the positive things said about it here.
Thanks again - Tim

Thanks to everyone for their comments. For those of you who currently have it installed, I have read on other forums that it increases the "smoothness" of the Cooper's acceleration. Now this may sound like a stupid question, but I have an '05 MCC CVT and when I shift it into Sport Drive I love the way it pulls (kind of jerky) similar to a stick if you follow me. Will that be removed with the addition of this intake?

Well, the "smoothness" that I noticed is the fact that I spool up faster through the rpm range. A good thing, all things considered.

Got mine directly from K&N. I think someone is selling them on Amazon, but the price is about the same. Just do a froogle search.

I really enjoy it. Sounds and feels awesome! Even better with an M7 Throttle Body.

I have a 05 MC and I bought the KN 57i (that was the only option at the time). Easy to install and works well. Be mindful that the clamps get loose over time and need tightening. Definitive sound and improved response. I purchased from Mini Mania.

It will fit the '05+. You just have to get a 3 inch rubber collar to raise it up a bit.

How does the typhoon compare to the drop-in flat K&N filter? Sound, HP, MPG?

I see that K&N offers up the Short Ram Intakes on their site, but I see no reference for the 57i. Where are you finding these?

Okay, now I'm really confused. If you type in 2006 on the K&N site, all you get is the 69 short ram Typhoon Series. The 57i isn't available until you type in 2004, which alse gives you the same 69 sr Typhoon series.

I too am confused. They don't show the drop-in (flat) filter for the '06.

The 05 and 06 drop in filters are the same for the MC, but the earlier filters (04 and older) are different. If you can't find the 06 filter, look for an 05.

Multiple people with 05-06 cars have installed the 57i successfully, while we have yet to hear from anyone with an 05-06 car who has successfully installed the Typhoon (short ram or not). I'll believe that evidence, rather than trust K&N, who obviously don't care enough to get it right when determining which of their products fit which cars.

Maybe I should volunteer as the test subject on this.
