Alright so heres the deal. I want a MC for a commuter car. I intend to add turbo and other moderate mods to it over time. Im currently looking at a 05. Its not an S. Does the MC have variable valve timing? And if not should I buy an S and convert it to turbo. I know its supercharged but I dont want the parasitic loss of power from a supercharger. Id like to get to 10 HP per pound.

Its gonna start out as a commuter. And i want to modify it as i go and then itll be my sh!# kicker. Im just now getting into this thing with Minis. I wanna get informed before i jump in. Thats why i wanna know if The 05 MC has VVT. Ive always wanted one cuz it looks like it handles like its on rails with the wheel positioning. Now im in a position to get one and i wanna do my homework.

The S model would definitely be a better base with the added benefit of oiling features the MC doesn't have. Plus, you have a bottom end already setup to take boost and more support in the aftermarket for it. If you're set on putting a lot of money into a MC to bring it to MCS specs, research transmissions and determine the build date for the switch from the Midlands to Getrag.

Start with an S! The Cooper bottom end cant take boost, the 5 speed cant take power, the ECU will be harder to get tuned right.... And the list continues.
No VVT on any first gen MINI. Its a stone age Chrysler designed engine.
None of what you are wanting to do is going to be cheap... We are talking doubling the price of the MINI (NEW car sticker price) in order to do it and get it right.

I'd love to have an R50 with ITB's like that --- I've sorta finally gotten used to the detached numbfeel of DBW, but still find myself irked sometimes by its inherent lack of tactility.

What all would be required in order to properly set up ITB's?

3 years ago (edited)Stock valves break at the stem, fall in and destroy the engine. A built R50/W10 needs at least R53 valves. I had a complete Cosworth head, that included Ferrea +1.25mm valves. Small 260/260 Kent camshaft. I tested about 10 camshafts. Also R53 block/crankshaft/rods with custom Arias high compression pistons. I had itbs and a 300/300 Newman cam to throw on, aiming at 180-190 hp, along with mechanical lifters, but i never completed it as i sold it and bought an S2000. This power was made on a custom single throttle body intake manifold. Stock manifold chockes the engine as it's made to resonate at around 4.5k rpm.
Thats ^ posted on his last video. His dyno pull video info states:
"8150rpm rev limit, this was a baseline dyno session for next mods along some fine tuning of the map at the current state, 158,3hp at 7400rpm and 15,7kg/m torque at 6500rpm."
So 158 hp & about 153 nm of torque. Possibly 175 at the crank by revving to 8k. Looking at his road pull video it had some serious rev-out going on, definitely a free breathing engine that also has a lightweight flywheel - but also has the heavy ATI crank pulley. He says his pistons were custom so its anyone guess what capacity he was running. But an impressive R50 absolutely!
