Engine Support how?

Hi,

I was curious how otheres have support their engine when taking out the transmission.

How did you support it?

If you do have a support hoist to go on top of the engine. How did you attach it to the engine? Does it need a speical bracket to attach onto the engine?

Any pictures would help so that I can get an idea how to do the work on it before removing my transmission out.

Thanks.

I'm assuming they come with some sort of .pdf or instructions, try running a search on here for engine hoist brackets.

Thanks, it did help a bit, but I am not sure what year model Minis they were talking about. It sounds like for an older model car and my is the 2002 R50. So I would have a hard time where exactly to mount the bracket on the engine with the hoist bar.

I just use a jack stand, or transmission jack with a block of wood in there.

Was it difficult and do you have a picture how you did it? Would there be any problem when trying to take out the transmission while the jack being in the way?

its a pain in the butt if thats what you are asking.
I put the jack under the motor
Ive seen techs just let it hang off of the upper motor mount but i dont agree with that.
I just give the motor some down angle and pull the trans off.
pull it off and pop it out.
I dont usually take pictures when im working.

Sort of a mess since I was in a rush to leave that day. Just replaced the clutch in mine. I used a floor jack to lower the engine enough to comfortably pull off the bell housing. Once lowered, put a nice piece of wood with two jack stands and a hydraulic jack for safer measure.

Wow, you are right it a mess. haha. Now, I get the idea how I can support the engine from the picture you have sent. Kind of scary.

I notices that you removed the two plastic inner fenders. Does it really need to be removed?

I just brought a Hoist Bar Support to go on top of the engine, but I dont see many people are using it, cause I cannot find how to attach it onto the engine where it located. So I guess, I will try and use the engine jacks.

Thanks.

Yeah, it definitely was scary just having the engine sit on 3 jacks. But if you place them well, you'll have enough support and stability. "These jacks hold up a whole car, they can hold an engine," I thought.

Technically, you don't have to remove the plastic fenders, but it'll be Hell in a hand basket to remove everything else. It only takes a couple of minutes to remove both, just a handful of fasteners.
