Modifications on a Budget

I own a 2005 Hyper Blue Mini Cooper base model (R50), I need some help finding aftermarket parts. For example i want to change my air intake to a injen, 8mm Magnecor Spark Plug Wires blue, then I want to do a blue engine dress up any other mods i can do?

What's your budget? What about an ecu flash, adjustable short-shifter or a pulley upgrade?

$1000 at the moment. Hopefully that will rise soon! Thanks for the reply!

Congrats, the R50 is a great car. You can see all the mods I have in my sig... if I were in your position, I'd blow the whole budget on a set of coilovers or shocks/springs. It's all about suspension with this car.

I would get and AFE or WMW intake over the Injen.

I like my aFe a lot, but everyone LOVES the Way/DDM intake from WayMotorWorks. The guy who convinced me to get the aFe has made the switch to Way/DDM!

Congrats, definetly go with our WAY/DDM intake as it has shown to be the best for power and throttle response. Plugs and wires won't do anything for HP on your car. Otherwise an ECU flash is another good bang for the buck mod for your car we do.

What would a pulley upgrade do on this car?

A 15% pulley adds about 10-15hp and a few extra pounds of boost (the added power will kick in at lower RPM ranges).

R50 is normally aspirated.

Whoops, missed the chassis, thanks Davis. 'Twas referring to an R53!

I built my r50 on a budget. The majority of my mods were purchased second hand or on sale. The marketplace is your friend.

Infact there is a R-Speed R50 exhaust on there now.

I would say hands down the best bang for your buck modification is an intake or a rear swaybar. I have the DDM intake and love the sound and response it provides! The rear swaybar was great as well; allowing the car to turn and rotate quicker than before (imagine being able to dial out a bit of that plow feeling when turning at high speed) both mods are under 200 dollars per mod with brand new parts!. From there, i would focus on more suspension like danny said. I have TSW springs and koni yellow shocks and love the stance and ride it gave my car. What are the goals for the car? Do you want something truly fast? If so, I would find a nice R53 or R56 S model! But if you want a fun DD, suspension and a few basic bolt ons would be your friend.

Welcome to the R50 club!

I just put the aFe intake on my car and the Megan Racing cat-back exhaust. LOVE them. aFe is just over $200 and the Megan is $355.

Get a Cooper S Sport+ rear sway bar and the car should be closer to neutral in handling. Nearly any MINI car club will have a bunch laying around, probably for free, that's how I got mine.

The aFe is AWSOME. Nothing that you can feel in performance, BUT, after 4000 RPM under throttle, there is the most glorious intake rasp that is LOUD. Funny thing, it's silent under 4000 RMP.

The exhaust is fun. A little loud when you first start it up, but as the metal heats up, quiets down and only makes itself really known under throttle. Again, I love it. It is a good compromise with performance, sound, and looks. (nice oval shape)

Loads of great posts thank you! I will get on upgrading my Cooper and get back to you soon! Thinking of starting with intake and exhaust, then move to suspension. But before I start I need to figure out what this weird noise is in my car :/
