Car is making a "pooping" sound when shut down

I have a 07 Cooper that has had this problem since new. When I stop and idle or turn the engine off I often get a venting sound from the rear on the driver's side. It is pretty loud and the dealer can't find it. Of course it will not cooperate and make the noise whenever I bring it in. They think it might be the emissions system test where the tank is pressurized and then vented to check for leaks. I have not heard this in other R56s. Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm pretty sure every MINI does this. Both of mine have.

Huh? Never heard a "pooping" sound before. Could you either elaborate or provide audio?

As normal as the Sun rises and sets!! The sound is more like a "bump" than a "Pop" I think, this is NOT the Trunk Monkey Syndrome, this is just a bump kind of sound. Heard it tonight after I shut down from our commute home.

I'm really confused. I gotta listen for this sound now, because I never heard anything remotely like it.

Pooping Sound

It is a venting sound, sometime slow at 1 per second and sometimes rapid at 5 to 6 per second. It is very noticable inside and outside the car. It can go on for 15 to 20 seconds at times, normally more often when it is hot out.

I will try to get a recording and post it.

Is it a pooping sound or a popping sound?

It sounds like something rubber is settling. If you drive the car hard, then park it and shut it off quick, you'll hear it start happening within a minute or two.

My Cooper does this as well. It is a 2011 with ~200 miles. To me it sounds like an evap-vent from the gas tank. It is just a low burping noise. I was going to ask the service center when I go and pick up floor mats this weekend.

I have an '08 and got it with 60k on it- I noticed the popping (not to say it wasn't there before) about two weeks after I got it. I would turn it off and go to unload the boot and I would hear a low 'pop' noise, and I've noticed it every time I turn it off now that I've started listening for it. It worried me at first, but it seems pretty normal and nothing has gone funny on the car. And it is also in very weird intervals, sometimes a series or just one or two, very odd!

hahahah totally normal guys. Ive had it since day one since picking up the car and its at 85k miles now. all it is is extra back pressure from ur exhaust escaping when it expands in the muffler. hot air cooling as ur engine shuts down.

Better known as the "pop and burble" like the earlier MCS's make on their superchargers. They have programmed the -11;s to make the same sound.

If it wasn't for the steering wheel, it would be hard to tell if the car was going forwards or backwards!

Pout goes the Justa'

Yep, I heard it this afternoon as my car was sitting with the engine off, cooling down after a short ride.
I know a fart when I hear one and my Mini farted, plain as day.
"Pout".
For me the mystery is over. Like the rest of us, our Mini(s)... fart.
(Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

In all seriousness, I wonder if this occurrence is related to the two times my MINI has thrown a code over gas cap ventilation? I've never heard the sound described here. Those who have, ever had your computer speak up about vent problems with the fuel cap? Wonder if the cars that 'relieve' themselves don't have those error codes due to being able to vent (however impolitely).

It's not the exhuast. The noise you are hearing is your gas tank. unlike most EVAP systems that just use the normal engine vacum to scavenge fumes within the tank. BMW notice a serious flaw in the design...... it was not nearly complicate enough.... no really. so what they did was add a pressure pump to the gas tank and now when the system goes to purge for emissions it uses the pressure within the tank to evacuate the..... poop...(:D couldn't help my self) the noise your hearing is the gas tank contracting back to its normal size. what the hermans didn't think about is that by making the tank out of plastic it might.... flex. so yeah, the noise your hearing is your breathing gas tank.

Don't belive me, look under your car.... look at the straps.... now notice that your push pins that hold the straps in are missing.... either the pin gnomes are at it again, or there is a bit of unintended flex going on
