Custom Exhaust
Custom Exhaust
Hey all,
I have been reading up on all the forums regarding mods and a lot of you guys have done custom exhausts for you R56's. How do I go about doing that? I have been wanting to since I got my MINI last August and I have been searching for ideas, just not sure which is the best way to go.

Take it to a shop and tell them what you want, would be my suggestion if you're not good with your own custom mods. Local auto parts stores and try different bends if you are good with custom mods.
I've looked into that, and even into simply grafting a complete "S" exhaust system onto my justa. You can do it, and everything will bolt up properly.
But why?
There are a lot of issues -- begin with the cost, to do it right, way over $1K. Then, you lose things like the spare tire.
In the end, you gain almost nothing. It appears that there is little advantage to doing it. You don't wind up with anything unique. It looks like an "S" in back, but, so what, there are lotsa "S"s out there -- no one will notice a car that looks like an "S" but isn't. And it doesn't wind up going like an "S", it still goes like a justa.
There just have to be better ways to spend a grand on upgrading a justa's performance.
My opinion, YMMV.
Anyone tried any of these parts? Just stumbled apon them yesterday...

There is nothing I would love more than to get a sweet sounding exhaust on my Justa. I'm with ya Scottquake. However, in my quest, I have found nothing worth springing for. I wouldn't want to spend more than $600 on an exhaust, but that's just me. It doesn't really give you $1k worth of performance.
If I were in your position (which I am), I would start with a Cold Air Intake (which I'm gonna). I've heard they produce a neat little growl. It's a $250 mod and you can find alot of opinions about them on NAM. Personally, I think I'm going with the DDM Works CAI.
If you find anything cool, let me know. Keep us posted on your findings.

Yeah a grand is a bit much for an exhaust, I was just seeing if some has used supersprint and if they had a sound clip. What about the headers? Or what other headers are on the market??
Ebay or Amazon look for OBX headers. Their like 250-300.
Are they worth it? I want to beef up the growl of the engine a bit and a little extra air flow and push to the car would be nice. I will eventually get a full custom exhaust, but for now im just going step by step.

She has a really deep growl after the exhaust. The intake is a custom K&N cone I put together from AutoZone. Total cost around $250-300 after fine tuning the pipes for the exhaust and tubing for the intake to the way I wanted it.
Exhaust road test finished piping.
Exhaust prior to finished piping
Intake prior to K&N filter.
