Drop-in air filters vodoo?

Any experience with drop-in air filters in the R56 MC such K&N, MiniMania or others? Would it make much difference in our engine?

They make it so you can clean your filter instead of buying new paper ones from time to time. If you expect to be able to notice any power gains, you will either be sad or will convince yourself that you can feel more power.

Drop in K&N in my R50 improved the higher rpm sound and was a definite improvement. My stock filter was quite dirty and MINI would not replace it under service.

short term you just saved... long term, you'll be paying more. cheaper and more convenient to be able to just clean it whenever you want

I know. I still planned to get one anyway because I haven't done anything to my mini cooper for almost a week.

How often will I need to clean the reusable filters?

i clean mine (open element, not enclosed like a drop in) every 5000-7500 miles
it's not necessary to clean it as often as i do but i like to keep it clean so the MINI breathes a little better

Well, I just ordered a blue Alta filter that works with the MC from Outmotoring. Doing it for the environment. Don't want the world overrun with old paper filters.

Any tips on installing? Should be easy to figure out I presume.

Anyone install an Alta drop-in filter in their R56 MC? The model number of the one I ordered seems to be the same as the one for the R56 MCS, and I've heard they are not compatible. I'm waiting for a reply from Outmotoring.

Turns out the Alta filter listed at outmotoring.com is only for the MCS. They corrected the website it seems now after my questioning.

I am curious as to why MINI would not replace your filter under your service contract?

I've been waiting a month for the K&N drop-in paper filter for the MC. I ordered it for $35 at Amazon. I'm in no rush for this marginal mod so I'll keep waiting.

This seems counter to the manufacturer recommendations. Any noticeable effects?

If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter, it is time to clean it. When used in normal paved road, street or highway conditions, our replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box should require cleaning every 50,000 miles and our large conical filters on an intake system should require cleaning every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible.

Just remember to be very sparing with the oil. Don't over oil it as it could lead to problems with the MAF.

Overall, I have been very happy with my ITG drop-in filter. It improved throttle response a bit, changed the sound of my car from the whining noise of before to a slightly more powerful noise, which is always good. Plus, it re-usable and fits well in the stock airbox. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased with any single mod that i've done to enhance performance.

YES, that oil will mess up your MAF.

According to ITG, the filter does need to be re-oiled. Is that true?

Cool. Keep us updated. How much does the sprint booster differ from just applying the sport button?

Mine MC is maual tranmission and doesn't has the sport button...So sorry I can't tell what the difference btw...

But things I know is the engine has more response, rev trend to be faster and more fun to drive...

one problem I got from the maual transmission is the frist gear is too short and lack of power in the 1000-2000rpm, sprint booster help me to solve this problem...

But yours is automatic trans, dont forget to order automatic version...

I recommend u to use it...I think this is one of the mod that u can noticeable feel when u do this mod...

If you have a 2nd gen MINI and it dosen't have a sport button then a trip to your dealer is in order.Sport buttons are standard on ALL 2nd gen up MINI's.
