Need help getting my new car home

I have been trying to figure out a way to get my car from Seal Beach, Ca. to Alabama, or at least somewhere closer to me, I was going to drive there and tow it home but I would be going by myself and it's just too long and boring alone, 2,140 miles twice, plus a week of lost wages, so then I thought about flying out and renting a U-haul truck to tow it back but they want $4,000.00 for it and it would be another $500 for gas, I called a few car haulers and got a quote of $1,392.00 from one of them, I'm nervous about how they would treat it, the car is on a 6x12 trailer, anyone have any other ideas or know of someone going east ?, Manuel barje@bellsouth.net (256) 442-4905

Call some more companies in the area in California area, you can probably find a better deal. My car is going from Long Island, New York to Seattle right now for $1195. I hear that you can usually put a car cover on it when being shipped for added protection. Or check prices on an enclosed truck.

It's on a trailer already?

GO get it, run, don't walk. 800 miles a day @ 16 hrs and 50mph avg speed, there and back in 5 days. Or spend the $1400, I am sure they are insured, right?

it is better to spend the transportation company, because you are talking about taking time off from work, and it is loss of wage

The old classics are better off being shipped, I think, Manuel. If it were a new MINI, I'd be tempted to drive it back to 'bama for you!

You need to find out who Classic MINI and MINI of the Hamptons (both NAM vendors) use to ship new MINIs to customers. Maybe those shipping companies are more reasonable.

Edit: I am moving this thread from Off Topic to Classic Mini Talk.

Driving it won't work, it's geared for rolling starts, stop & go driving would eat up the clutch quick, it has NO charging or lighting system, and it runs on 100 octane leaded, would be lot's of fun through Ortega pass , the holidays are my busiest time of year so taking off would really hurt me and there is a bunch of personal equipment I need to buy and racing school to get my license, and spares, Manuel

Check w/ some service members in your area or advertise in Military papers in California. There are plenty of service members who are transfering all the time and you may be able to hook one up w/ a few bucks and get your car at the same time. Years ago I found a transporter throught the Navy Times. Toted my 68 Dart from PA to Seattle, door to door for $700. Allied moving was the next cheapest at $1200 depot to depot. He even knocked $100 bucks off because he filled my car w/ baby items for someone else. There are plenty of small transporters and hot shot haulers that may accept the load just so they don't have to run empty. Just a couple of thoughts.

Don't let them put a tarp or any kind of loose cover over the vehicle. I guy I used to work with in CT moved to Arizone and had his FX45 shipped by truck. Lucky for him we do a lot of business with a couple of different car shippers so he got a good deal. They told him not to let anyone put a tarp over it because grit will get between the tarp and the paint and sandpaper the paint. Going through the southwest with all the sand there would of course make this much worse.
