Dash tray parts

I have found/bought a replacement liner for my '79 Mini 1000 dash tray; however, the two cards that make up the support for the tray liner are in pretty sad shape. I have not located replacement parts anywhere - even Newton Commercial. Has anyone found replaced these? Did you you make them yourself or buy them?

Thanks!

Talked to numerous people today. Bottom-line, use your old one as a template and get either door card stock or framing material and cut out a new one.

I've found suitable material at art supply shops. They sell different thicknesses and colors of heavy card stock, matte board and mounting board in big sheets.

I had the exact same problem. I'm now on dashboard version 3.0. I would make sure that you buy the paper already coloured black, painting it doesn't look as good.
Don't get the really thick stuff, its a pain to cut and it frays a bit around the edges. It also creases when you try to install it. I also gave up on cutting it with the little side wings attached I couldn't make those work so I ended up cutting them out separately.
And even when I used they original piece as a template it still didn't fit nicely, so it might be an idea to cut out two pieces and use one of the pieces as a new template and customize it in the car, so you don't wreck the finished product by trying to take it out to fix it.

Are you talking about the black pieces that go on either side of the center speedometer?

MINIxB,

I was looking for the cardboard supports that fit in the dash tray either side of the center binnacle that support the vinyl dash tray liner. I actually have some matte board material that I am planning to cut out new support pieces from. I have the vinyl liner - but was wondering if the support pieces were available.

I talked to a couple of Mini parts places and it appears that these are not readily available parts and are generally cut out using the old ones as a rough template.

There's cardboard that's supposed to go there? Mine doesn't have anything.

I used a 4-ply matte board (from Joanne Fabrics frame shop) and cut new pieces using the old parts as a template. Actually found that the new pieces were a better fit -- made the, wider than the originals. I will take a picture when I get back from my trip showing the new pieces in the dash tray. I have my old vinyl dash tray that I am using as a template to trim the new one.

Hello OK,
I took a look at your red classic. It has the same gauge pod mine does. Did you replace the cardboard dash surrounding the binnacle? What did you use? I bought an item called dash liner from Moss motors for $65.00 but I just don't think it will fit. I am afraid to bend it to make it fit, just in case I need to return it. What did you do?

Stargazer,

I have attached some pictures into photobucket for you that shows what I have done.

The dash tray liner lays in the base of the dash area creating an area for setting items - phone, owners manual, etc. You may have been looking for the (2) pieces that fit either side of the center binnacle. Mine were 30 yr old cardboard and were in rough shape. My new ones (I bought from Mini Spares - overall was cheaper even with the shipping, however I ordered a lot of parts) were vinyl covered cardboard and I am pleased with the quality. I have not installed them yet, as I have yet to install the heater and the heater hoses through the firewall - did not want to have to take them in and out.

I made new cardboard supports (sits in the dash under the liner). You can see from the picture that mine were warped from water or something over there lifetime. I used them as templates to make new ones (actually made them deeper for a better fit by some trial & error). I used 4-ply framer's matting and scored them where necessary for the area that rises up to the center binnacle.

I hope the picture and comments in photobucket help with you questions. I took pictures of the old and new to show you what I am doing.

Installed dash tray liner........

MINIxB,

I included a picture of the stripped dash showing the old cardboard pieces in place before I cut out new ones.

Wow, thanks this has really helped me to see what lies beneath the dash !!!!
Your pictures laid out exactly what I needed to know. Your binnacle pieces look like what I bought, so maybe they will fit. Mine is also 30+ years old and when the mechanic removed it months ago he tore it in 2 places because it is so brittle. Thanks for coming to my rescue.
We're off to the Mini 50 in the Smokies. Happy Birthday, Mini.
