ID my engine and anything else you may see.

So I'm DEFINITELY new to the engine and mechanics of a classic. I know it's a 998cc, and I know that my car is a 1989 mini30.

What I'm asking is for you guys to tell me anything and everything you can about my engine/trans and all accessories and everything you see in the engine bay.

I can figure out stuff on my own like heads showing 5 or 7 studs, and I have reuilt... lets see.... 3 engines now, but all were classic muscle v8's. This is my first time on a wee beastie.

I don't know stuff like.. what's an A+ engine.. what other specifics do you think I NEED to know or may WANT to know.

I'm more than willing to answer ANY questions that I can, but I am temporarily away from my mini (makes me sad) so I will do the best that I can.

Here's the only two pictures I have right now.

I AM at work so i can't really see the pics....but I can tell you that you have one of the most reliable engines.....I have same setup btw.

You can't see the other studs because the are inside the valve cover.

Sweet. So then is it a 5 or 7 stud head? I understand that it has 7 studs, but when these guys talk about "Can you see 5 or 7 studs?" I just assumed my answer is 5 studs because.. well... I can only see 5. haha. Or are there some that ONLY have 5 studs?

One day I will know ALL about these things. And I am a very competent person when it comes to engines and cars, I promise. But these little beasts are unlike anything I have ever worked on before. Including the few motorcycles I've worked on.

Car appears to have a 998cc. The thermostat housing appears to be to close to the valve cover to be a 1275. Looks just like my 998 except i have twin carbs. Look on the rear of the engine towards the firewall. If it has small rectangular covers called tappet covers then it is definitely a 998. The 1275's have a big gap between the valve cover and the thermostat housing.

Thanks BobbyHarr883. I know it is definitely a 998. I'm just really looking for more information on them like.. what the heck is A+ and stuff like that. lol.

Any links or first hand info on the 998 (mine specifically if there are different types of 998's) would be AWESOME!

Theres a little bit about the a+ in here. http://www.aronline.co.uk/index.htm?codeadof.htm I know there's a nice little list of the differences between the a+ and the a but I can seem to find it.

I also like this little write up on the history of British engines. Probably not real useful for your specific car but it did help me to figure out my mystery engine swap. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccy/pdf/enginehist.pdf

I'm still new to these little engines my self. All together they are pretty basic. The su carbs are a little different than im used to though. I have tons of shop manuals, and diagrams on about everything on the car. If you need anything just let me know.

I've checked the first link. That's how I know it's definitely a 998.

And I'm an active member on the other forum. lol

Thanks for all the information though.

well 1275 S blocks have tappet chest covers..............

What is it your tryng to find out..................
A-series engines differ from A+engines in that the dizzy and shaft are different and use a different clamp,on 998ccs, 1275cc A-series had chest covers, A+had a ribber block at rear.............

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm really just trying to get the basics down.

I wanted to know what a+ was.. and I got my answer.

Someone on another site said that the air filter is aftermarket (I know that already) and that it looks like I have an aftermarket dipstick? Is this true? Does anyone have a picture of what the OEM one is supposed to look like, or if mine has been relocated or something.

not sure which dipstick you have, but the stock ones suck.
I like the alloy ones...pricey, but it's the last one you'll buy.
