Sound deadening material

I have found this -- somewhat hardened after 30 years -- sound deadening material in my car in a few locations:
  • On the roof
  • In the doors
  • In the rear pockets
What have you replaced this with when you have restored/rebuilt a Mini? I imagine it helps stop a tinny sound when closing the doors, etc.

Is it useful to replace with something? If so what? Does it make a difference? I am putting on door skins and would like to so something if it makes sense before we reassemble.

Thanks!

Im in the process of restoring my 1971. Im going to use B-quiet sound deadening material. If you are familiar with dynamat it is very similar to it, and a lot cheaper. The web site is http://www.b-quiet.com/ You can get 50 square feet of it for $85.00. Jc Whitney sells some stuff but its more expensive. You can put this stuff everywhere. This stuff does help a bunch. Im going to put it on the floors, behind door panels, fire wall etc... If you are replacing the carpet. The more expensive carpet from newton also has a sound deadening material made on the back of the carpet.

i have found that there is nothing that really deadens the sound of a mini....i have used 3 different products and the only thing that makes it quit in a mini is to not turn the key and start it

Do some research on SecondSkin products. I'm using it and is supposed to better and cheaper than Dynamat. It does make a difference.

Be Quiet is also another good product.

I'm about to order some stuff called eDead that can be had for $1 per square foot, it's the same basic stuff as dynamat, it seems.

Agreed!

My Mini pick-up is flushed out with dynamat, carpet, carpet liner and leather door cards. Carpet extends up the back to the rear window. Has a headliner, too. It's about as comfortable as being in a phonebooth with a chainsaw running.

Since mine is maxed with "cushy comfort" and sound deadening material, it really makes me wonder what a stripped bare MK1 sounds like at 65mph?

More choices.......

Thanks for the ideas! Gotta love this forum - there is almost always options and there is enough folks out there that you get some good advice!

Big Norm - we can always count on you for the bottom-line, the cold hard facts, the no-frills answer (often with some humor to boot -- pun intended)

Since I have no stereo in the plan for the car - my IOPD and set of headphones might make for a good sound deadener -- not too safe though!

call me silly

rather than use something just like Dynamat but cheaper .... I use Dynamat.

I tried a knockoff and it kept peeling off so never went there again. One thing about Dynamat...it stays where ya put it in my experience. and I also used the better Newton carpet set which as stated comes with insulation pieces... neither is a least cost option. but like the talk about sill panels. you can buy a knock off, or pay more for the actual Rover part....

but a tweeked 1275 with twin DTM is gonna rattle your fillings no matter what. I was aiming to eliminate as many rattles as I could. I have a stereo in the car; can't remember the last time I played a CD when driving...have no ant' connected. But at car shows I'll sometimes crank up the sound track from the original Ital' Job and Self Preservation Society!

do one thing at a time...do it well....then move on....

Go on the high side is my experience. eDead, referred to above, is excellent. I used it in another full size car and it was easy to apply and stayed where it goes. Not only is it far less expensive than other quality products, but they sell it by the linear foot, so you can buy exactly what you need and if you came up short, you can go back and buy just a little more.

I would say, mostly the floor and the rear seat area.
