More power for a little 998?

Hey guys,

I am just trying to examine all aspects of buying this mini and the goal over the next few months would be to rebuild what needs rebuilt and get it in as best shape as possible with the given money I have (still undetermined)...

That being said, what all can be done to these motors? Specifically a 998 and a possible 1290.

Supercharged? Cammed? Induction, Muffler/headers? Porting/engine work??

I am clueless as to the performance aspect of these little cars..

Anything is better than nothing, so fire away!!

Thanks a ton,
Aaron

You will find better results searching on a classic mini forum, such as the one Mini Mania runs.

I recommend you invest in a subscription to MiniWorld

Then you'll quickly see that ANYTHING is possible. I mean one of the folks down here just got done putting the engine from a 300ZX in a MK-1 shell.....

http://www.miniworld.co.uk/

You might find it on the shelf at Barnes and Noble or Borders...

and if you think the monthly cost of this mag is too much....my suggestion is don't buy an old Mini. My average parts bill for the month exceeds this amount.... I think a classic Mini is a bad choice for a 17 yoa on many levels including, at the top of the list, SAFETY.

Buy an A series Miata and at least have the advantage of airbags and side door beams.... 6 to 7 K will get you a nice one and it is known for its reliability. Not a term that will often be applied to a classic Mini.

On any Mini, the largest performance increases will come from carb, intake, header, exhaust, and cylinder head changes.

A 998 will never be a 1275.

You live in PA among the hills, go at least 1098 (more torque than a 998) or better, a 1275.

Hi..A 998 engine can yield a whopping 120bhp if you can afford, this involves a special crank, rods and pistins, a rebore, then there's the head ,cam, and g/box.............but you can do a budget tune, new cam, stage3 head, light fly and backplate, duplex timing gears, and a good carb.........

You can boost it, which is what I plan on doing. I got the turbo and manifold on ebay for under 400, with everything but a carb. Its not together yet, so figure in like 5 years i'll post the progress...
I am contemplating swapping the turbo parts to a 1275 as a spare motor, also to install and tune a custom fuel injection system i'd have to build. I am only looking to run at most 14 psi (1bar), and at most change to different rods if they get hurt. The 998 is good for this as it is a low compression engine (8:1) to start with, unlike higher compression motors.

I know there are other 998 owners here and some of us arent mechanics. A haynes manual can walk you through alot of stuff, but "a good carb" isnt one of them. If you would be so kind, could you offer up some more information about what size carb, etc etc. Links to what these babies will cost us would be extremely helpful too. Thanks!

To make a link, put in some text, highlight it and then use the "Insert Link" button above the posting box (looks like a blue globe with a link of chain). You'll get a popup - just paste in the URL of the site you want the link to refer to and hit OK the selected text will get an underline and go blue, showing you it's now a link. Clicking on the text will take you to the URL you pasted in. Simple!

"How to Modify Your Mini" author David Vizard is an excellent resource for this.

I have a brand new stage 3 cylinder head with a new kent cam 256 and a small bore LCB minus the y pipe for 1600 bucks if you or anyone else are intrested. I just bought a 1380 to build, so there goes my plans for a super 998.

How much for the head by itself?

True, but it costs the same amount of money to do so whether you build a 998 or 1275. The results are substantially different, however. I would never put silly money in a 998 beyond a stage 2 kit.

i agree with you minimad but it's all on what you want to do with you're mini, some go for the vtec and others do what they like with whatever engine they have. it's a hobby for me and a passion to work on these cars. as for the stuff i have for sale, it all comes together in one package...sorry
