Usually one has a later Mini with the larger brakes and wants to fit 10" wheels. Here, one must fit the smaller disks because the wheels just WON'T fit over the larger disks.

But going the other way..... If I wanted to fit 13's on my 79 fitted with 7.5's I would not NEED to change to the larger disks altho doing so WOULD provide more stopping power

{BTW...:"The 12" wheel has the same rolling dia as a 10" wheel ..." Sorry: I was a math major and I'm struggling with this one. Now depending on the sidewall height of the respective tires mounted I could possibly agree but otherwise the formula for circumfrence makes it directly proportionial to radius doesn't it? Larger radius = larger circumference....another name for "rolling diameter"? So the wheels have different circumferences..period ...but one could mount tires on a 10 and a 12 that resulted in a hub to street radius that's the same.....in other words a wheel + tire combo for a 10 and a 12 MIGHT be the same}
Sorry I thought Boney was asking ????s as I believe his 1967 mini has 7" discs as opposed to Cooper S wich has a 7.5" disc and the later minis used 8.4" discs AND 10" & 12" wheels do have the same rolling dia Its a well Known FACT amougst the mini family and I don't care if you are a Maths Major I know Mini's I've been Building them for 33 years now ..............

OH by the way Capt_bj the 12" wheel replaced the 10" as they had to comply with British Standards and EU laws as to Braking thats why they used 8.4" discs...........

ok, fella's let me get this straight. If I upgrade to the 7.5 inch brakes I can run either 10 or 12 inch wheels. correct?
If I go to the 8.5 I have to stay with 12 or 13 inch wheels and 10s will not fit? ok?
what if I stay with my 7inch brakes, would 12s fit? sorry dont mean to **** anybody off and I very much appreciate all of your input and knowledge!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL.. now I have a question. I suppose if a 12" wheel has a tire on it with a low profile and a 10" with a high profile and the diameter were the same, then it would take the same amount of distance to make a full revolution. But if the diameter is larger doesn't that change things? Lets say for a minute you had no tire on it make a mark on each and roll them, a full revolution of the 10" wheel would not go as far as a 12" right? So according to what you are saying mk1leg is the trick is changing the wheel size without changing the tire's diameter. Is this right?

The 10 or 12 inch is the rim size. The outer diameter of the actual wheel depends on the rim size,section width and the aspect ratio of the tire.

Wheel Diameter=2 X Section Width X Aspect Ratio/2540+Rim Diameter

For example: for a tire size P235/75R15
235=Section Width
75=Aspect Ratio
15=Rim Diameter

Check out the chart near the bottom of the link to compare tire sizes and rpms. There's a slight difference, depending on the tire size chosen to compare.

You can put any wheel on a 7" cooper or 7.5" Cooper S disc brake setups. Same with the drum brakes.

With an 8.4" disc setup, you are generally restricted to using 12" or larger wheels.

Standard 8.4" discs stop better than standard 7.5". And both stop better than 7" discs.

awesome!!! thanks for that info spank, you the man!!!!
From what I read I probably have a 3.76 ratio. Now time to decide what to do I have to buy new tires anyway. 10's or 12's that is the question.

I used to have 3:44 in it and something happened to that tranny.. the last one I put in had 3:76 I think it is. I honestly didn't see much difference. It took off the line nicely and held highway speeds just fine. I run Yokohama 008 on it now.. They wear too fast so I am going to try something different next. Those are 10 inch wheels. I have a 12g206 head on it and LCB header. I did however just break a crank but that was at pretty low rpms and the car had alot of miles on the engine. More of those pics.. I have a few more of that shoot.. Here are a couple more.

Ouch!

The roof is caved in! Even in the shot of her on the fender/hood, it looks like the hood is mooshed down. I'm calling PETC (people for ethical treatment of cars).

Mercy...Aren't those pics from the crazy Russians? Its funny when I saw those pics the first time I knew I was getting old because I was more worried about the roof too!

Minis only look correct with 10" wheels.Of course I am biased and very old school because I lean toward sliding windows and external hinges too!

I found those pics when I was looking for Mini Limousines. I think this is the garage that made this mad mini.

The website on the last image I think is how I eventually came to find the sexy Russian Seems ironic and something that could get you killed in Russia to wear a UK flag!

I'm afraid to ask what that rear seat is supposed to be. And that hood graphic. Is it supposed to be whispering to us "Shhhh, this classy love limo is sneaking into a mini meet near you"?

I dont know how to tell what the final drive ratio is without counting the teeth on the gears. Any suggestions on how to figure this out without removing the engine/trans? The car also appears to have 7" front disc brakes. I would like to upgrade them to the 8.5 discs and go to 12 inch wheels. Just would like your input on the pros and cons on this.
Thanks
For your gear ratio issue, I remember some of the Cooper S models (not the 1275, but either the 997 or 1071) came with really close-ratio gearboxes as you have described. Also your 7.5" discs are from a Cooper S. Maybe your original motor was swapped out for your 850 sometime in its history.
