Can you help ID my carb please?

Hi, as you might know I got my first mini not too long ago and I would like to know what kind of carb do I have. I feel that the car is running rich since the exhaust pipe is all black and I dont get decent MPG. I would like to adjust the fuel mixture and idle speed on the carb.

I really appreciate your help, thanks.

Looks mighty familiar...

Mine's the HIF-6

Seven Enterprises has a rebuilt HIF-6/44 on their web site. Includes the carb, the water heated mainifold and a K&N cone ... http://www.7ent.com/detail.cfm?pageid=27. Could have been Photoshop dropped into your pictures....

PM me if you want to discuss more.....there's good news and bad news if you have this carb.

p.s. these pictures were first used about 4 years ago when I asked "can someone help me ID my carb?"

It's been a while but this looks like an SU or one of the copies of it.. I know there were some Japanese carbs that looked like the SU.

Did you notice any difference after installing the K&N filter? I have the (fugly... huge... plastic...) stock air filter on Fiona right now, and I positively LOATHE it.

I was told that the engine is a 1380cc and my mini is a 1972. The PO also told me that it has a roller rocker; however i don't even what does it do.

Needle Change

If you change to a K&N you'll need to change the needle in your carb(s) ... the airflow changes so much that you must change the needle to adjust the carb for it. Seven Enterp. can usually give decent advice over the phone, changing a needle is easy and cheap. But many say that getting the best needle is as much art as science....

If that makes no sense, I recommend

"SU Carburetters Tuning Tips & Techniques", Brookland Books, 1994, available from MiniMania .... altho there are others.

See also http://www.teglerizer.com/sucarbs/techtip6.htm

and http://www.teglerizer.com/sucarbs/index.html, altho there are a lot of dead links off this one....

note that besides UK cars, Datsun & SAAB used SU for a time so there's good info to be found on their sites too.....

hmm i didnt change to a K&N myself, that filter already came with the car so i assume everything is tuned the way it is, since there are some other modified pieces.

The rocker roller is for the valves. The old style engines have just a flat plate that push the valves open. The roller rocker has a wheel on the end of the rocker to push the valves down, which reduces friction and wear.

If you want to know for sure about the carb there should be some numbers on the side something like "jzx 1611". I just googled the number on mine and the model popped up everywhere.

The carb is an HIF6 SU

Unscrew the black cap & remove. The centering pin goes into the piston. This tube should be full of oil up to about 3/8" from top. 30W is okay. Some use lighter oils or trans fluid.

Mixture adj screw is below fuel inlet in picture above (clockwise to richen mixture)

The fast idle screw is pictured below..it works against the choke cam

The idle speed screw is in the recessed hole at about 5 o'clock position, looking down at the carb in photo below

To set carb at intial settings and a roough adjustment (without CO meter):
  1. Run the engine to operating temp, then switch off
  2. Unscrew the idle speed screw until it is just touching its stop with the throttle valve shut.
  3. Check that the choke is closed and the fast idle screw is clear of the cam.
  4. Turn the idle adjusting screw 1 1/2 turns clockwise to set initial position.
  5. Turn the mixture adj screw until the top of the jet is flush with the top of the jet guide.
  6. Now turn the screw 2 turns clockwise.
  7. Attach a tach
  8. Remove vacuum advance line from carb. Plug nipple on carb. (remember to reconnect when done)
  9. Restart the car, get to temp
  10. Set idle @ 900 RPM
  11. From here reset the mixture by turning clockwise to richen, opposite to lean. Try to obtain the fastest idle speed consistent with even running. From there begin to lean it out until the idle just begins to drop.
  12. Reset the idle speed.
  13. Set the fast idle by pulling out the choke cable to align the arrow on the cam with the adj screw. Set fast idle by adj this screw to get 1100-1300 RPM.
