Trailering a Mini, I know this has been asked
Trailering a Mini, I know this has been asked
but I can't find the threads. I purchased a 1967 Mini and am looking to bring her home, I don't want to use a dolly but a trailer instead and am thinking of renting from Uhaul, does anyone know which trailer would work?
THANKS!
THANKS!
I have read in various threads that UHaul will not rent you a trailer if they know it is for transporting a Mini. The postings recommended that you tell them you are hauling a Honda Civic or other small car. You will also encounter a problem getting the Mini on and off the ramps. You'll need to change their slope a bit to clear the Mini's undercarriage. Again, this is not from personal experience, just what I've read here and at Minimania.com.
You can tow it on a Uhaul trailer. Your wheel base will be very tight, so you will need someone to guide you on to the trailer. Uhaul has weird rules about what type of cars that you can tow. Just tell them it is a Honda or something.

You want to get the car hauler. It has the appropriate straps to keep the car on the trailer. I wouldn't reccomend just getting one of their regular cargo trailers. If will jump around on the regular trailer when you hit bumps unless you really tie it down.
I told the Uhaul I got mine from it was for a mini and they even called to confirm it would fit. Maybe they had no idea what they were talking about but I didn't have any trouble.
And yes a mini fits quite nicely on a 6x12 trailer.

That picture on that thread that shows your MINI up on the trailer, is that a trailer that is open in between the middle or is it a full flat bed? Did it come with ramps or did you use your own? That is the problem we are having is that they have a 12 by 6 flatbed trailer but it does not have any ramps.
If you mean MY photo, it was a U-haul rental, open in the middle. Ramps came with it - they slid into the bed when not being used. We did extend them with 2X4's, though, to make the attack angle a bit shallower. We used the exact same rental trailer for both the new AND classic Mini and it worked fine with both cars.
Who is providing the trailer you're speaking of? Are you buying it or renting it?

It will span no problem. Call Uhaul, they know the dimensions off hand so you can measure if you have any doubt.
You might scrape the bottom of the car at the top of the ramp. I use the trailer jack to raise up the front while loading to solve this problem.

All I can say is that I rented that trailer twice, and put a classic AND a new Mini on it. The classic is a tight fit, and it's worth it to have a second person spot you while you line up to drive up the ramps, but it WILL fit.
Also note that if you use U-haul, they will ask you what car you plan to carry on it - just tell them a "Mini Cooper" and say no more. As I recall, they had to type something special into their computer to allow a Mini at all (old or new) - the first time we towed the new MINI, and they had that still in their computer when I rented the trailer a second time - I did not clarify their assumption.

Ok that is really helpful. Also thanks for posting that old post, I remember reading it is the past but when I was searching I don't think that I was typing the right term to pull it up, I was doing transporting a Mini.
Thank you both very much!!!!!! Hopefully all goes well this Sat.

That's what my straps did when we trailered my Mini. What are safety chains??
You're moving to Cinci? When? That's only like 2 hours tops from Columbus/Dublin where I am - several people from the Dayton area come over for our monthly club events - see the MidOhioMotoring section in the Regional Clubs area for details - hope we can see you at some events. I'm usually the only classic Mini that attends, and it would be nice to have someone else come. that goes for you too, H82WRK.
U-Haul has some weird *** rules. for example, they wouldnt let us rent ANY trailer for a 2004 explorer to tow a motorcycle. some lawsuit ********. as for clearence, just put some 2x4s down to make it a shallower ramp, and when you reach the top jack it up with a tire jack. i tell you, its times like these that hi-los are very handy
That is great because she has the hi los on her. Anyways I will put up a post with some pictures of her and Imago and MiniXB that would cool to hang out. My mom in law lives in Columbus so I am very familiar with the area, I'll check the link out. MiniXB once you move to Cinci you will have to come to the Steak and Shake cruise in with me in Milford. Stay in touch with me so we can meet up when you make it here!
Schweeet! I'd love to have a classic contingent present on drives and at club meetings - everyone LOVES the classics! it's kind of a long drive for you guys, I know, so if you ever want to come out, say, the night before and stay in my guest room, you're always welcome.
We have a QSL Brit Car night up here in Columbus as well, starting in the Spring.

I don't know when I'm moving to Cincinnati yet. I'm still looking for a job up there. My sister and her boyfriend already live up there in Russelville (1 hour from Cinci) and I'll be living with them. I'll definitely come to some Mini events. I know another guy in Columbus that owns a traveller and a Mini Cooper S classic.
Uhaul is kinda funky. Back in '95 when I wanted to tow my Cooper around they would not rent me a trailer to use with my '85 Suburban 1/2 ton. The Suburban wasn't "approved" to tow their trailer. I never did figure out if maybe they thought I'd try to use a bumper hitch.... As if.
The '63 rides just fine on my 12' diamond tread homebuilt with dovetail. For the vintage racer I put the hi-lows all the way up to fit on the trailer than lowered the car for the tow.
Axle straps around the rear trailing arms with the tie down straps crossed and everything should be ok. I put the car in gear with parking brake on.
That's worked for numerous tows around Texas, plus a trip to the east coast for the Watkins Glen 2002 Zippo Vintage Gran Prix (Mini was featured
