I need a "quiet" muffler on a MK1

I recently bought a '60 MKI with a nicely tuned 1380A+ motor. The sport 2" Maniflow exhaust system quickly received some objectional frowns and comments from my wife in regards to being too loud and raspy sounding.

So, I guess I'm going to be installing a "quiet" passenger car muffler in the near future. I was hoping to pick up a small unversal muffler at the local autoparts store...but the smallest was a bit too big to fit in the side exit position.

Anyone know of a source for a small mufflers?

If you have a single box setup you could just go with a twin box. I have the twin box Maniflow on mine and it's not too loud. You could also go with the standard RC40 twin box which is probebly a little quieter. Frankly a tuned A series motor is going to be loud by modern standards, both inside and outside the car.
Admit it though.... it sounds pretty cool doesn't it

What are you gonna do with your Maniflow, hmmmmmmmmmm?? How about a swap for my OEM single-baffle exhaust in "classic rust".

Seriously... LMK if you plan to sell the Maniflow - I've actually been looking for something with a bit more "oomph" for when I replace my aged stock pipe. You have a cat-back system, yes?

I have a twin box Maniflow. It's the big honkin' 2" system with a large bore Header.

From minimania: 2" bore twin box Maniflow exhaust system for your Mini or Mini Cooper. Rear side exit in the standard position for your Mini Cooper. If the 1.75" bore of the RC-40 isn't enough and you want to make it better, and louder, this 2" Maniflow system is for you. Very high quality, with skid plate on the bottom of the mufflers and gusseted pipes. Requires use of large bore LCB or 3-1 header. Recommended for Mini Cooper 1380s or screaming 1275s.

My 1380 has a 286 cam, stage III head and twin 1-1/2" SUs, 1.5:1 roller rockers and a lightened flywheel. It is quiet enough when the revs are low and "off cam"...but the light flywheel takes some finess to gracefully pull away from a dead stop without a thunderous roar. Yep, it's pretty cool!! Once the revs are up and "on cam" it just screams and keeps me busy shifting through the gears.

I guess initially, I could just get a cheapy universal muffle at the local autoparts store. Then weld some flanges on the pipe ends which will allow me to quickly unbolt one muffler and swap it with the other. So I would have a quiet ice cream cruiser...or a screaming track machine when apropriate.

I think I'll try a few other stores...

I got it!! On the way home from work, I stopped at a different autoparts store and they had a small oval shaped muffler that fit nicely. After it was installed and the car was lowered back to the ground, I took it for a quick spin around the block...I think it is quieter..but from inside the car it's hard to tell over the roar from the carbs. Yep, she is still loud....now time for the wifey test. We'll take it to the farmer's market in the morning and see what happens....

Matt, Sorry, I'm hanging onto the Maniflow for now. If your are interested, you are welcome to try the muffler out for a few weeks to see what you think. The muffler clamps onto the pipe just under the rear subframe. You'll need a 2" system to use it. If your interested, lemme know.
