How to remove the stock rear view mirror?

I finally got sick of squinting into the glare of cars behind me and purchased a new mirror with a "Day/Night" switch... It glues to the glass, so I'll need to remove the stock mirror (the one with the suction cup). Problem is, I can't see or feel any fasteners, screws or bolts anywhere on the triangular mounting plate.

Can I remove the stalk from the triangular piece perhaps? Or are there fasteners up behind the head liner? I'd rather cut the mirror stalk off at the base and paint over the stump than try to pull the headliner and tear it or make it sag... What's the trick of removal?

Thanks in advance.

the headliner is held into place by the windscreen rubber and not the 2 screw for the rear view mirror....there is a little plastic cover over the screws that you have to fold over to get to the screws.....

That was it... Now I have to get the replacement to stick - apparantly the silicone glue needs more than 8 hours to cure (it fell off at the gym this morning).

Yup, classic problem with aftermarket mirrors - heck even OEM ones don't like to be replaced.

I was wondering what folks are doing about the lack of a night position. I've tried to rotate the mirror both up and down and can't seem to find the reflection of what's behind the car?

Did your replacement one do the trick?

don't use any of the diy glue kits. i had the exact same problem you are experiencing. go to a windshield repair center and have them attach it for you. most use a very high quality and expensive glue, iirc it's loctite 349. it's a glue designed to ahere to glass and is uv activated and resistant. for the most part, the glass store in my area didn't charge. if anything, you shouldn't spend more than $10.

Wow thanks, I don't think I would have thought of that! I've just been pointing it at the floor and counting headlights

The mirror has to be built specially to have a night mode... The surface glass is at a slight angle as opposed to the silvered part.
I'll check out a glass place if the mirror falls off again - thanks.

Matt,

You should be able to find a Mini rear view mirror that has day/night flip lever to install in your car. I have replaced my old, non day/night mirror in my 68 woodie with one from a late model that has the flip lever.

I kinda like the Autotechnica one I got, but thanks. I put it back on today - after 2 days of drying, if it's gonna fail then it's gonna fail. If it does, I'll look for the Loctite 349 - thanks!

Well, after 2 days of curing I put the mirror on the clip, went to adjust it...

...and it fell off in my hand. Same issue - the silicone grips the window like grim death, but it falls right off the metal puck. So I went to Buckeye Auto Glass in Powell at lunch and they fixed me right up - $25 (which I did NOT have but what the hell, right?) and 10 minutes of time and now it's hanging on well. Cross your fingers for me...
