I really like Golz Motors in Deerfield. I know they aren't exactly NW, but they do a darn thorough job. My mother had a problem with her CVT in her 04 Cooper. It was just a software update that fixed the problem but they really know MINIs and other Euro cars. Good luck!

Rataz:

What were your symptoms leading up to the failure? My daughters '03 with 109K miles has developed a sputter when accelerating from a stop. Seems like its held back for 2-3 seconds. If I let off the brake, let the car roll, then feather the gas and then accelerate it will be OK.

Had it to the dealer, they pulled a trans code or 2. One dealt with 2-1 downshift. Of course they recommend replacement, though he said a flush and reprogram *might* help, no guarantees...

Thanks for any info. My girl loves this car!

My mother had the same sputtering problem on her 04. The mechanic "did a software update" and the problem was gone! Maybe they can do that for your daughter's 02?

Interesting. Svc writer mentioned a flush and re-program. Didnt say anything about an update, unless they are the same. They wanted 400 bux for this.

My 2005 developed a sputter when accelarating from a stop. Don't have the code they pulled handy right now but it did lead to new plugs and
wires. Runs smoothly now and has for almost 2 years. When the sputter first started I'd slowly apply gas and accelerate very slowly and it would be fine. It almost made me feel as though I was perhaps causing the stumble untill the the code was read, informing of the misfire.
Good luck

Hmm, well since I need to do it anyway, will try this first. Can't hurt. Thanks.

A new CVT [or a rebuilt one] will cost between $6k and $8k. Rather than "break the bank", I'd sure try other ways to solve its problems, and an outlay of $400 is nothing compared to what it could be.

Kathy,

Thanks for this reply, as this HAS corrected the problem in my Daughter's R50. I replaced plugs /wires, would've done the coil also, but an incorrect one was sent. I have driven over 200 miles, runs perfect...no lite, no codes, no stutter, she's very happy.

I noticed the difference immediately, feels like a different car.

And I plan on going back to the Mini dealer that wanted to bang me $7500 for a new tranny. I had found a guy in the UK who exported rebuilts to the US for half the cost of a new unit. And they all wonder why I despise them

If you have an MCS, you don't have a CVT.
