Windshield cracked

Club,

This cold weather is not only killing my tropical born skin, and toes, and fingers, but most important, my MINI!!!

I discovered two, not that long, but very noticeable windshield cracks. I called my insurance company and they told me they will be very happy to replace it, but I need to take the car to Mexico...

Do you know where I can replace it here? or get it fixed? or stop the cracks? Im not planning in going soon to Mexico and they seem to grow every day

Ditches 1 Cracked windshields 1 If the crack is growing there is no fixing it.
I believe if you have insurance written by a company who is allowed to write auto insurance it KY they have to replace the windshield with no deductible.
I have had 5 windshields replaced over the years and the insurance always had shops to recommend to do it. Always locally.

I'm about to replace my second MINI windshield. The crack has progressed and is now 3/4 of the way across. I'm waiting for warmer temperatures before replacing. Check with your insurer, mine will replace a windshield with no deductible.

You are correct. The only issue is whether or not your insurance company operates in both Mexico and the U.S. I would assume that you had to get insurance in the U.S. when you moved here but maybe I'm wrong. If you still have a Mexican company then they will want you to go back to Mexico.

Most any shop can do a simply replacement. The MINI windshield isn't a difficult one to do thankfully.

I think it's time to drop your Mexican insurance carrier.

Safelite does the best and least expensive job of replacing [or repairing if the crack is smaller than a dollar bill] windshields. They will either use their own house brand, or for another $10-20 they will supply an OEM windshield that would cost you double at the dealer.

Lot's of talk around how the aftermarket glass is tougher, but that is just not my experience. The aftermarket glass is not the same shade of green as the rest of the glass, so I prefer the OEM shading better anyway.

It operates in Mexico and the U.S., but no windshields replacements, ohh i didn't read the small letters at page 365 of the contract

I wish, but i cant, long story.

Thank you everyone! I will quote with Safelite and send a claim to my insurance company in Mexico, or enjoy a drive all the way there, any one interested?

We used Safelite in Florida and were quite unhappy with the work. The first guy put in a very cheap windshield that was distorted and broke both side pillars (glass was all scratched too). Got a second one put in- next level up from the cheapest- they broke clips on the eyebrow molding (?) and just left it to flap in the wind. Weather strip along the top where glass meets plastic looks kinda crappy. We wanted OEM for that seal but they claimed there's was better. Figured we'd just order the part and replace it on our own since we'd had enough with them. Anyway, the dealership told us that the whole windshield would have to be pulled out to replace that part. So, just a suggestion... if we had to do it over again, we'd order and have that part for them to use.

Just wondering... why is your windshield cracking? Could this be a warranty issue instead of going through the insurance company?

I could be wrong. I understand that to get a car licensed in Kentucky you must be insured by a company licensed to write insurance in Kentucky and it is a requirement to have windshield replacement coverage if you carry comprehensive coverage.

miniola,
Thanks for the heads up
One more reason to go for a two day drive to Mexico!
One of the cracks started where a small rock hit my windshield, yesterday morning it started to grow, and the other one I have no idea, it just appeared there one morning. I bought the car there, and the warranty was for two years, and its over now.

mimini1,
Yes that's true, but my car still has the Mexican plates

Well that should make it easier to spot you. I thought I saw your MINI about a week ago near Oxmoor Mall. I'll bet it would be no fun registering a car from Mexico here.

Club,

Yesterday night, going to Target, I saw how my windshield' cracks were growing right in front of my eyes, from 2-3" to almost the full length and they just stop when they intersected each other. How could they grow in such little time?! in 2 minutes, they grow like 3 feet!
