Cardboard Boat Races
Test Run Complete
AMOKs,
Took the prep trip to Heber today. Gret time with three exceptions. One, Construction
on both the start and the finish of my drive. Hwy. 5 north of Cabot is adding lanes but besides RGP2.5 being dwarfed by a lot of orange barrels it went pretty easy. I really thought there would be a lot of traffic pulling boats and travel trailers on the way to the lake but it was minimal.
Heber is a busy place on Saturday mornings. I can only imagine what it will be like right before the boat race. It took me 58 minutes to get there from the start of the drive. I am thinking, in order to make it to Sandy Beach by 11:00 am, we will most definitly need to leave no later than 9:15 in order to get a parking spot.
The drive around the lake was awsome though
. Hardly any traffic. These are great roads for winding it out.
Rain hit on the way back through Quitman and I was slowed a bit. Then when I got to Gravel Ridge. Construction, construction and more construction. I really do not have an alternate path so we may have to just grin and bear it.
It took me 3.5 hours to go the 163 miles. I was able to go pretty fast at times but these are more travelled roads where traffic did slow me down.
I am now preparing the rally guide and will send it to all in my e-mail. I will also have plenty when we meet on the 28th.

Glad to hear you successfully avoided the orange barrels (and the POH-lice, who like to gang up on folks passing through Quitman). Wasn't able to make the meeting on the 28th, but C & I will try our best to make the run to Heber. Will you be posting details in advance?

I am not a member of AMOK (yet) but I hope it is ok if I meet you in Heber Springs so I can get to know some other mini owners. I am a new mini owner and just amazed at the following this car has...and I love being waved at by fellow owners... Hope to meet some of you in Heber!

come on mrs. mini and join us. We would love to meet you. I live in Mayflower.
Anyone living in the Mayflower/Conway area who wants to go and ride together we can meet at Bates in Mayflower. I plan on taking 89 to 107 to get to the McDonald's on Kiehl. If you don't know where Bates is, coming from Conway take the Mayflower exit and turn left heading back over the interstate, Bates is the convenient store about 1/4 mile down on the left. (It's the only convenient store on that side of the interstate.)
I'll have my two way radio set to channel 7. PM me or email me at carrie@motoringamok.com and I'll give you my cell phone number so you can call me.
I have to be at the McDonald's to give away a door prize at 8:25 so I will leave from Bates at 8 am sharp. 89 has a long, long straight stretch so just to give you an fyi, I don't (no matter what I'm in) drive 55 down this road.
There is a Sheriff somewhere down this road so I don't drive extremely fast either.

Remember these races do take place in the water on the beach so bring sunscreen, wear hats, anything you may take to the beach for protection. I was also told we can get in the water in a designated area to watch the races. Wear you bathing suits, bring floats, towels, and a change of clothes. We will be on the beach so wear appropriate shoes and clothes for sand. We are going to have a blast!!!
Now for something important!
Roadshow has graciously offered a set amount for our lunch.
We will be having lunch at Mr. B's in Heber Springs. I will need to know if you plan on coming to lunch with us. Everyone will pay for their own drinks. You MUST RSVP with the number of people attending with you. Our plate lunches will consist of a meat, hushpuppies, slaw, and fries. Our meat choices are 4 pieces catfish, 4 pieces shrimp, or 3 pieces chicken. When you RSVP I also need to know which plates you will want. These will be preordered due to the number of people. If for some reason we go over the amount Roadshow has provided we will each have to chip in on the rest with everyone still paying for their own drinks.
The Borkowski's has also invited everyone over to their place afterward for fun and fellowship. Let me know if you would like to go over there so I can tell her about how many will be at her place.
Don't forget to RSVP and tell me which plate you want and don't forget sun protection and appropriate attire for sand during the race and after for you MINI.

Hey, the Rally Guide is great - I'm printing off a color copy to add to my ever-growing collection of MINI memorabilia.
Question - C & I may not be able to get a babysitter for the girls for the entire 10-12 hour event, so wondering if it would be okay/a good idea to join everyone later (for lunch at Mr. B's @ 12:30)?
Also (again, for babysitting-planning purposes), from description of route, looks like we should plan about an hour drive each way, up and back (that sounds about right from last time I drove LR - Heber) and then about 3.5 hrs for the drive around the lake? Does that sound about right?

Joining us for lunch would be great. Lunch time is up in the air right now. I'm not sure about the route times. Someone will get back with you. I'll post the times as soon as I know something.

I want to thank all those who have emailed me and given me their food order. Those who haven't, the order goes in Friday, tomorrow, morning. If you haven't given me your order your lunch will not be paid for.
I need to know if you want catfish, shrimp, or chicken and how many you want. PM me or tell me here or email me carrie@motoringamok.com.
This is going to be a lot of fun!

For anyone meeting me in Mayflower at Bates, I've started to debate about my leaving time and making sure I'm sure at our rendezvous on time. So if you are from the Mayflower/Conway area and would like to ride in together meet me at Bates (see previous post for directions to Bates). I will leave there at 7:45 am.

Thanks everyone for coming. We had a great time meeting everyone.
The cardboard races were fun and entertaining to watch and HOT! Next time I am wearing at least bathing suit shorts so I can get more wet. Getting in the lake really helped cut down on the heat of the sun.
Mr. B's has good fish and great fries.
rgp2, you did an awesome job coordinating this run!
I'll post pics soon.

I'm so sorry I missed it. I was 'thinking' about at least meeting for lunch. But I got busy around the house and before I knew it, it was 12pm.
I'll keep checking and hope to meet up with you all another time.

We hate you missed it also. We really would like to get to meet you.
Thanks! My daughter was up there camping and had to go into town for lunch (some issue with her new portable grill, lol) and she came home to tell me "guess what i saw at Greers Ferry"
She said she saw one MINI, then another, and oh my god there's another one and another one, LOL.. by the time she got the camera it was too late.
I'm thinking a drive to Eureka might be in order for next weekend, I've not been there in years and what a drive!

We're planing a weekend in Mtn Magazine to ride up the Pig Trail and over to Fayetteville. First weekend in Nov. It's an AMOK event. We're staying at the Paris Inn, the lodge is booked. I'll be posting about it soon. I still have to get hotel info.
I'm working on posting pics of the Cardboard Races. I still have to figure out how to shrink them down to size.

Lets try this size. This is Falcon Jet's boat painted up as a shark. I believe these are the guys who win it every year. They were haulin'! It's hard to believe it's cardboard.
