I've been wanting to do a mash-up of the attendee registration data and integrate it into a Google Map so we can see where people are traveling from to attend this years MINIs on the Dragon. Well I just got it finished and you can check it out at your leisure.

The attendee map is found in the MOTD area in the Main Menu. You can also click here to see it in action.

The way it works is that I query our databases to retrieve unique zip codes from all of registration orders. Then I process each using Google's geocoding service to build a cache of information (to improve the display speed of the map...versus how slow a Frappr can be with lots of data on it). Then each time someone wants to view the page, the latitude and longitude data is pulled from the cache, and passed to an object which handles the building of the Google Map and display.

The map will only show the city and state someone is traveling from but no other personal information.

I noticed when loading the map the pins showed up first, and looked like an almost solid red map of the eastern US.

 

I see a lot of people from the Akron, OH area. Just wanted to say "hi" from Cuyahoga Falls. I'm planning on traveling down with the "Great Rust Belt Caravan 2007". I'm leaving Wed. afternoon and meeting up with the western PA folks down at the Tamarack, WV rest stop around 5:30pm. Give a shout if you have similar travel plans or wish to join us.

 

I found me & 14 other MINIS from Bama. Not too shabby for a state that is dealerless. Cool map
