1st Annual Rafting at MOTD - Official Thread
1st Annual Rafting at MOTD - Official Thread
There were a few people interested in rafting, so I thought I'd create an official sign-up thread. You'll need to make reservations directly with the rafting company, but I'll keep a tally of who's going and we can drive down together. I'll bring the maps and you just bring your sense of adventure (well, and a change of clothes). If you're interested or have questions, just post on this thread.
When: Depart at 8:45am on Saturday from Fontana. If you're not staying near Fontana Village but still want to go, you should plan to get there around 9:30am for the 10:00am trip.
Where to meet: In front of the Fontana Rec. Center
How do I make a reservation and pay: Visit Nantahala Outdoor Center online at http://www.noc.com/ or call them at 888-905-7238. Sign up for the 10:00am trip on Saturday, May 6th. If the web reservations indicate it's full, there's probably still room for more. Just give them a call.
How much does it cost: $34 for "Guide Assisted" (might not have a guide in your boat) or $42 for "Fully Guided" (guaranteed to have a guide in your boat).
What do I need to bring: A change of clothes and a towel.
What should I wear: (From another rafting web site) The best thing to wear is shorts and a t-shirt. You must also raft in shoes that will stay on your feet. We recommend tennis shoes. No flip-flops or bare feet please. If you are rafting during the colder months, wear clothing that will not absorb much water like wool, polypro, etc.-no jeans or sweats please.
Where are we going: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=35.331...&iwloc=A&hl=en
Where can I get more information about rafting: Either visit http://www.noc.com or call the good folks at the Nantahala Outdoor Center @ 888-905-7238. They'll be glad to answer any question you have about rafting on the Nantahala River.

Sounds like a great event. We are signed up for something else too, but with 500+ folks, I bet there will be some people for this event. It is great there is going to be such a variety of things for people to do!
We'll be there
My wife and I just booked our trip!
We love rafting - have done the Ocoee (yes, probably mis-spelled) several times. I know that the Nanthahala is slower, but should still be fun. Something different anyway.

As one who has rafted the Ocoee and the Nantahala (Land of the Noon Day Sun) I'd like to warn you that rafting the Nantahala in the middle of July is cold, in the beginning of May, it'll be frigid. The water is turned off every night and rerouted, much like the Ocoee. In the morning, the tap is turned on again and the water comes right from the bottom of Nantahala Lake. It's a fun trip, but you might consider renting a wet suit, especially if it is going to rain. You could risk hypothermia otherwise.
Sigh
Well, looks like we are going to miss the 1st annual raft trip. We'll try for the 2nd next year! A death in my wife's family has caused us to scrub our trip altogether.
Have fun, and see you next time!
