Panoramic Pic again this year?
Expensive Solution
I'm not attending the Dragon event. This is solely from a photographic standpoint.
What y'all need for something like this is a panoramic camera capable of producing a, relatively, distortion-free image with reasonable sharpness. Obviously, it'd have to require a fine-grain film at this time. The negative would be very large and would most likely need to be of a low ISO (100 or less). For it to not show a lot of distortion, the film plane should be curved.
A camera like this can be very expensive, thus the need for massive commitment up front.

But if we were to do a group photo, why not go all digital and use software to correct distortion? There is a handful of tools out there today. Take a look at this.

^^^ I was just using that as an example of the technology. All of this can be done in trusty Photoshop. The software I use is called DoubleTake and is available for the Mac.

DCMM has not made any arrangements with a photographer. However, I'll have my super-WA lens and hope to take some pictures from up on the dam, just like we did 2 years ago.

PM Edge, he should have the latest info on this if there is any.

The TVA has to contacted and permission granted for the use of their property.
A time slot has to be found
Volunteers to help park the cars have to be found.
Bucket truck needs to be located and reserved.
Haemish is coming back from Oz soon, I think (Tom, he left 2 weeks ago, not day before yesterday), but he's not the person who should have to do this.
You guys want it bad enough, make it happen yourselves.
Good luck!
Excellent explanation of the background required for taking such a "simple" little picture with a true panoramic camera mbabischkin. I used to run a photo lab specializing in this kind of picture and like anything of real quality, there's a lot more to it than meets the eye. If you think you looked tiny in the back row of last year's picture, just wait till you see the results with a conventional camera, much less a digital point and shoot stitchup.
Consider instead more of a catalog type format where perhaps each car pulls into a standardized area and setup for its own "mugshot" and then turn all those individual shots onto some kind of big poster or flipbook maybe. (.02)

One other thing to keep in mind for the amateurs who think that they can pull this off and do it better than last year, when printed last year's photo was 5 feet long....
Now as for a normal picture (non-panoramic) of much of the group (because getting all the attendees into one place is like herding cats
) that's what the "dam photo" is for, and there are usually lots of great quality shots taken of that gathering both from down at the base of the dam and also from on top of the dam.
Dear Bill,
I have absolutely NO IDEA where you have gotten this incorrect information from!
To date, I have not even been contacted about doing a shoot for your group. I have no idea of your meeting date or anything else since nobody has bothered to directly talk to me about it. In fact, YOU are the very FIRST person to contact me about your Mini group since we said bye bye last year.
If there will be a meeting planned, and if your group wants a picture, then I suggest that someone should get in contact with me about it before I book something else. Also, I have certain requirements that must be met in order to do such a shoot this year because it will be on the Fontana Resort property, and not on the dam property (because the TVA Police are not being nice to us).
Before anyone just goes and "makes up" a program for any meeting that I am supposed to be a part of, I highly suggest that they contact me and put me in the loop on it.
Thanks for your interest, I hope to see you and your swell group again.
My best,
George S. Pearl, QPP

Let us know what you find out
Please keep all of us informed of what is going to go on. I would be interested in buying a pic of the large group, or as large as we can get. It looks like there may be a few events that would lend themselves to good "big group" pics.
One is done every year for Mini Meet East. My oldest one is from 1986 here in East TN. The photographer takes orders and payment at the time of the photo. Same guy does it every year. Most people in the pic are going to buy so meeting minimums aren't generally an issue if that is any help with the pre-order situation with the photographer you are working with.
The latest:
George had a blast last year, and WANTS to come and do it this year. He has a place to do it, permission to use it, and a bucket truck. He has no idea why anyone would assume otherwise, and stated multiple times that I am the first person to mention anything about Mini's this year.
There are issues though, and as the coordinator and a member of the coordinating club (DCMM), I'm going to poke the leads for the event and help resolve some of these 'drama' issues before posting any further details.
