I'm getting ready to cancell a room at the Microtel (20 miles I think). I've got a pretty nice room at the Tapoco (private porch overlooking the stream, should be quite romantic) Rgds, Michael

Microtel is only 20 miles? I thought i saw in another thread that it was an hour drive away from Fontana?

If it is only 20 miles then please PM me as soon as you cancel! How much was your room? Actually, maybe i can take your reservation? I can pay you for your deposit.

Thanx!

I'm trying to find something right now as well. The pickins' are slim, thats' for sure. I've found a few independent cabins but they're a little bit more pricey.

The Microtel in Robbinsville is indeed 21 miles from the Dragon. The hotel that is an hour away is in Bryson City.
Next time, don't wait so long...

The year before last I stayed in one of the cabins this place has (not the mansion) ... it was very secluded but only about 5-8 minutes further out than the Microtel. Maybe they still have cabins available...

Smoky Mountain Mansion and Cabins
email: phcovert@aol.com
The mansion provides ample room for corporate retreats, family reunions, or wedding receptions, and, our nearby cabins are ideal for couples or small families.
P.O. Box 2059, Robbinsville, NC 28771
828-479-4220 or fax 828-479-2440

You know next year, maybe one of the clubs can rent the mansion and throw a MINI bash...

Go to www.tailofthedragon.com and click on the lodging links. Also, call Fontana Village and Microtel in Robbinsville (both have links on the Tail of the Dragon website) to see if they have any lodging available. There may be cancellations! Always mention you are part of the MINI group. Some places extend a discount to us.

*Isabella* just called Fontana Village for her and me to see what information she could muster.

They said that they have released the lock on the MINI group rooms so now it is a total free-for-all. However, they are still booked solid. She works for a hotel in Milwaukee so she's going to work her magic... I'll keep updating to what she finds.

this looks fun...

UPDATE:

http://www.hemlockinn.com/rooms.html
Breakfast and Dinner included.
It is in Bryson City - 45 minute drive away... but let's remember that the whole reason for being down (or across, or up) there is to motor... so you get 45 minutes more motoring then those staying in Fontana (we win!)
They have available King sized bed: $169 a night but after a 15% discount for staying 3 or more nights (which most of us will be) it is $144 a night.

When she first told me 144169 at first I was like .
But... when you figure dinner and breakfast for 2 people a day... thats a really good price! (I'm glad she's the smart one)

I think this is what we are going to go with... but we'll keep looking around for others too!

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE:
Apparently the 15% discount is only available for Monday -> Thursday stays. (le' sigh)... oh well $169 for a last minute procrastinator still isn't that bad!

smart move...a lot of Fontana veterans do exactly that. If you can't go, someone is always there to take it over...

Breakfast is handy, but won't you be going to any of the dinners at the Fontana?

A couple of years ago, I stayed at Bates' Cabins, which is just off of 28. It's about a 45 minute drive to the Dragon from there. I (and about 13 other people) stayed in the Archer's Lair cabin. To say it was ridiculously gorgeous would be an insult. The place was amazing.

It's a bit expensive for 1 person/family, but if a couple of people got together, it's actually very affordable. And, even though it's 45 minutes away, it's via Rt. 28 which is just slightly less twisty than the Dragon!

I would check each day with the place you want to stay. People cancel all the time. I prefer to stay in Robinsville. The roads going to the dragon and Fontana from there are a blast to drive. I think even more fun than the Dragon.

Well I found a place. I recommend that anybody still looking check here: www.grahamcountytravel.com. The lady at the Tapoco Lodge gave me that site when I asked if there was anywhere else she'd recommend. There are a lot of individual cabins on there for rent by owners. Some off the beaten path, but no biggie. I found a pretty good deal.

See you at the Dragon!

There is a room available at the Blue Boar's Inn in Robbinsville. It was a double booking since I'm staying at the Tapoco Lodge and forgot about this one. Rate is $135/night but it is a Bed & Breakfast. Could be a romantic spot 828-479-8126.
