Chilhowee Mountain Double Cross Q&A

A number of those signed up for the touring rally have asked questions about what class they should be in for the the touring rally. There will be three classes. Most people will be in the MINI class.

There may be some Minis along with us. We had a few last year. Sometimes the older cars don't have an operational speedo or odometer which puts them at a distinct disadvantage in a rally. If you are competing in a classic Mini, you will be in the Mini class.

Some people bring a support vehicle (read larger vehicle here) and
extra family or friends along who may want to rally in the larger
vehicle. Some of the roads we will be rallying on will be quite
narrow country roads and the large vehicles can be at a disadvantage
maintaining the average speed. Thus the Pack Mule class.

I hope that clears up any questions regarding the classes for the touring rally. If anyone has additional questions, just ask.

Donna

Edit: Additional class by request. Those in MINIs who wish to use GPS or navigational system will have a MINI GPS/NAV class available to them.

Glad you're packin' Ten but you will have to go in the MINI class. No cheating. Besides that, I KNOW who PACKS the MINI.

Ehhh none of you want to enter in the packmule class.... You'll be defeated by the "DC Metro MINIs Official Logistics Support Vehicle." The Subaru Outback!

Yes, i think I'm going to be seeing it on the Counterfeit MINI site soon. It's a wagon that "thinks" its a MINI....

Hmmmm.

Many people who have a keen interest in rallys and navigation really enjoy using navigation technology such as GPS. By forbidding the use of navigation technology, you might end up turning away many of the people who would be most interested in this sort of event.

I enjoyed the rally event a lot last year. I used my GPS and my co-driver and I did not take it very seriously and we did not even come close to winning.

Perhaps you should make another class for those that do enjoy using navigation technologies?

O.K., I'll be the big dummy.

What is the Chilhowee Mountain Double Cross? A TDS rally? When is it?

Thanks,
CB

EDIT: I found the link. Sounds like fun.

For anyone else who asks:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ble&eventid=21

As far as the nav systems or GPS, I have found that not many new MINI owners have run a TSD. As I am not a particularly experienced rally WRITER myself the directions portion of the rally is very simple and not designed to get anyone lost or be tricky in any way (well, just a little tricky maybe as it is called the Double Cross ). If you have had a desire to try something like this, now is a good time as it truly is a simple rally.

The points are in the timing and answering the questions (ability to observe) rather than the ability to navigate. The request to not use the Nav or GPS was to ensure no advantage for those who have it but not have so many classes for me to deal with (scoring, awards, etc.). The Pack Mule and Mini classes, although likely to have few entrants, are to allow any attending in alternative vehicles an opportunity to participate for the reasons stated above.

Can we use our GPS if we get lost

If there are a lot of novice participants it's best to keep it simple. TSD rallyes are definately for the more experienced drivers. My hubby & I are considered experts in SCCA rallying & we STILL have problems My advice is keep it simple & fun

If it is anything like last year, it will be simple and fun for ANYONE, and just about anyone is likely to win a prize regardless of their experience with this sort of event.

Although it is a competition and there are prizes, anyone taking it very seriously is probably taking it too seriously.

Sorry to be slow on the additional class question but life has been getting in the way of MINI-ing lately.

I have added an additional MINI class for anyone wishing to use GPS or NAV. I will be emailing those who are signed up for the rally for your class choice.

I can also now provide a box lunch to enjoy Dragonside from Tapoco for those who would like one. They would be available as you return from the rally. The details will be in the email to participants.

I just signed me and Michael up. This was our favorite drive from last year, even though we finished last (literally and in the scoring) and had never done anything like this before with our MINI. The roads were fun and we were challenged trying to figure it all out. Maybe we will do a little better this year

Oh, you could make a last minute class change. Especially if you see NO Pack Mules. Automatic winner.

Navigators wanted!

There are a couple of touring rally participants looking for navigators. If anyone is interested in a ride along, PM or email.

If you are interested in the box lunch at the end of the rally email or PM by this Friday, April 29. If you have already made a request for the lunch....I gotcha.
