Brake Light Mods at MOTD

Have a '02-'04 MINI? Interested in the now-famous 'Brake Light Mod' to turn the otherwise unused (or rarely used if you have rear fogs) upper section of the taillights into extra visibility-enhancing brake lights? TWISTER, Yucca and I will be there with our supplies to install the 'diode mod' into anyone's car who desires it. This modification will allow you to retain the use of your rear fog lights if you have them already, or allows you to install them later if you desire.

Let us know if there is interest in doing this, and we will work towards fitting in times between the various events to do the installations. It only takes a few minutes.

Note that the mod only works on pre-'05 cars with the backup light in the center of the rear bumper. The '05 cars have been redesigned to have the backup lights in the taillight assemblies. The rear fog bulb is now the backup light, and the lamp assembly is essentially inverted.

I'll be at the Fontana Lodge all 3 days. If you find me near my car I'll be happy to do your MOD. Just catch up with me anytime.

Thanks, guys! Mike of Donna/Mike did this mod for me after the first Dragon in '03! I think it's one of the best safety mods owners of "older" MINIs can have done!

Greatbear, I have a kit of parts for doing this and would be happy to contribute some of my time and electrical bits to the cause. . .

I'm also interested and staying in one of the Dogwoods with the spiders (hmmm, can add them to my chili along with some Insanity Sauce! ).

Would also like to get two additional diodes to bring back to install in my wife's 2003 MINI if that would be okay.

Thanks,
Marty

I don't know how I missed out on this mod for so long. I'm definitely interested. Is it BYOD? (bring your own diodes)

There will be diodes available there, no need to bring your own unless you have them already.

I swear I posted to another thread about brake light mods a long time ago (not the diode one), but it seems to have disappeared. I have a '05 with no fog lights. I'd love to have the mod done. Is anyone doing '05s?

This mod can't be done in an '05, it's only doable with the older tail lamp cluster found on the 02 to 04's

There is a kit that was developed by MINI-Rolls that was mentioned here just a couple of days ago that works on the 05. MINI-Rolls installed it on his "topless" mini and was testing it on a regular 05. A search should find the thread or you may check the PSMINI.org web site.

True, but that's not the mod that these diodes are for. Plus I believe that MINI-Rolls' mod for the '05s is a little more invovled than the one that is being done on the '02 to '04's...

Actually, I have mods for 02 - 04s the have the diodes and the 05s have the same diodes. My kits are splicing adapters and not just diodes, I take the time to solder the diodes into wires to create the splicing adapter, my kits are installed on over 500 MINIs 04 and earlier and now a few 05s have my kits. I installed about 15 kits during AMVIV this year. My kits are about time vs money. I am not getting rich on this by any means.

GB, what a great idea..
Mike Kaz did mine at the 1st Dragon for free (such a nice guy).....and I believe it's a definite life saver, especially since the upper lights are more visible to suv's.
I defy anyone to say "I didn't see her breaklights..."

Nobody's saying otherwise, nor is any post here intended to slight your kits. Your kits have lots of possitive feedback here on NAM and I think it's deserved. But that's not what this thread is about.

What's being offered here is to have the mod done in 02-04 cars at MOTD. No more... No less... A group from M2C2 has obtained the diodes and will be performing this for anybody who's interested... no charge.

I was supposed to have the mod done last year but couldn't find the guy doing them. Twister, do you have one of the NAM name tags so we can find you easily?? I would very much like to have the mod done if you have time.

Can

Interested. I'll be staying at Microtel but sounds like I'll be at Fontana a lot.
