Alrighty, got my Inn room booked. I'm glad I saw this thread. I didn't realize they were getting booked so quickly.

Oh, and people worried about alcohol. You can get Beer and such at the Tapoco Lodge store. I think that's where everyone in the region goes for their beer. It was fun watching their reactions when they pulled up and saw a parking lot full of MINIs during the Atlanta MINIs dinner.

Thought I would wake up the thread for the new car owners that may not know about this event. If you are in the Mid Atlantic next spring and are looking for a good drive with some fun people stop by.

Room Update

Ok, I spoke to the fine folks at the Fontana today!! We booking them up like crazy!!! Here's the latest stats:

1. There are no 1 bedroom Willows Cabins on property available.
2. There are no 2 Bedroom Laurel Cabins on property available.
3. There are NO Honeymoom Suites Available.
4. There are less than 10 each of the following style cabin available:
a. 2 bedroom Azeala
b. 3 bedroom Azeala
c. 2 bedroom Hemlock
d. Fireplace Inn Rooms

Now, there are still PLENTY of cabins at the Fontana ---for now. But I'd suggest you reserve early if you want to get the style/size that is right for you.

Come on kids....reserve you cabin NOW.

Hugs,
PB

Has anyone checked to make sure none of the cabins floated away during the hurricane floods? I hope they are all still standing. I'm remembering the conversation I had with the lady who made my reservation about trees falling on cabins, acts of God, etc....I want my little Willows cabin to be there..

I have checked with my friends at the Fontana and they sustained NO damage during any of the recent weather in the area. They feel very fortunate and are proud that all of the property has faired well.

So....I think your little Willows cabin is safe -- but considering they sold out so fast -- I think you might want to see what you could get for it on the "secondary market". Perhaps move up to larger digs.

Hugs,
PB

LouiefromStLou-better known as Lois along with hubby Gary-Willow Cabin at Fontana. Only problem is deciding which MINI to come in. Probably the Cabrio or maybe both

Hubby and I almost always do both everywhere we go......especially on MINI drives as I sometimes get car sick when riding. You can race each other here.

Good idea Stef. When we went there this fall they had some of the rooms set wrong but everyone did get a room. Better safe than sorry.

Newbie Dragon question.

From looking at the Dragon web site and checking out the pix, I'm a little confused. The road is open to 2 way traffic during the runs? Is that smart? I love driving my car fast but the thought of others doing the same in the opposite direction on a twisty, 2 lane, undivided mountain road, is maybe a tab bit more thrill than I'm ready for. I trust my skills, I have no idea what the other drivers are up to.

Well it is a public road, and has the designation of US-129 and it's owned and maintained by the states of North Carolina and Tennesse (depending on where you are on the road) so it's not exactly practical (or legal) for us to close the road.

We will not be the only users of the road while we are there, you will likely encounter heavy sport bike traffic, the occasional pickup truck or SUV pulling a trailer, and unfortunately also the lost tractor trailer.

Make no mistake this IS a dangerous road. Many lives have been lost on it, and many more have been injured on it. That's why the speed limit is 35MPH. You should drive it at a speed that you feel is the safest and most comfortable for you.

There is NO race going on, we're not clocking times. Some people drive the road fast, many don't and nobody get's crap for the speed they drive on the dragon (unless we could walk backwards faster! )

Just ask an attendee of Miata's at The Gap what happens when you're stupid up there...

Hwy 129 is an Intrastate Highway and its speed limit is posted at 30 MPH. Like any highway if you wish to go faster than the posted limit it’s at your own risk for ticket or whatever, but the road will be 2 way.

Accidents do happen on the road big and small. It is advisable to avoid one, stay on your side of the road and stay sharp.

Actually, the first weekend in May, the biker traffic won't be that busy. It hasn't been the first two years. And the bikes are not as worrisome as the folks in RVs, trucks, and sedans. At least now they've installed signage suggesting that semi-rigs avoid the road.

Everyone does need to be alert when driving Rte. 129. The Dragon is unforgiving, with very few turnouts and hardly any shoulder to speak of. It requires all of your concentration.
