Brake Fluid maintenance

My 2019 is saying it’s due for brake fluid in two months. The MiNi dealer said it’s 199. Does that sound right?

is it easy/cheap to do on my own or should i just take it in?

thank you

I did mine on my own and turned out fine and was easy. Did it when I replaced the pad/rotor with Powerstops. Having a pressure or vacuum bleeder makes it a one man job. Otherwise the old 2 person methods works fine too.

Nothing is difficult if you know how to do it and have the tools, support, and time. As long as you are familiar with working with tools and know how to properly use the small wrench required to loosen and tighten the bleeder screws, and understand hydraulic systems (especially the FACT that you MUST avoid getting air in the lines), and have the right size hoses to bleed off the old fluid into a container, it's one of the easier jobs on cars. It's a bit harder than an oil change, mostly because of the small bleeder screws and the air handling technique. Be aware you won't be cycling the ABS module (unless you have the OBDII equipment that can be used to do this), which means you aren't exactly replacing all the fluid...but you are replacing the majority of it if you follow the standard flushing steps. Oh, and realize brake fluid will damage paint if you leave it on the surface, and NEVER use brake fluid unless it is the right type from a sealed container. I prefer pressure bleeders over the two-person technique since the latter can stress the rubber seals as the pedal stroke exceeds it's normal range of motion.

Have done brake fluid services on other cars. Not hard. But still a bit of work. And I had a pressure bleeder. But had no way to cycle ABS system.

Given how bad brake fluid (at least what I caught coming out from the calipers) looked I'd not skip the ABS cycling step.

Last time I did a brake hydraulic system fluid (and clutch hydraulic fluid system) flush/bleed I did something wrong and the clutch wasn't working quite right after. I had to do an "emergency" clutch fluid bleed on the parking lot at work late at night. Thankfully I had a co-worker who agreed to work the clutch pedal.

Got the clutch hydraulic system sorted.

But decided that was it for me.

Now I take my vehicles in for this service. That $199 you give really doesn't sound all that bad.

After seeing some of these posts...I'm thinking the same. Thank you.

I did it at home on our F60 when I also changed out front and rear rotors and pads with fluids etc... So it was while I am in there kind of thing with all the wheels off and stuff... on the r53, i had the dealer do it and while not apple to apple, the F60 brake has better feel, more firm for sure and brakes like a sport car. Also of note is that I also did upgrade front caliper rotors and pads too on the r53 so kind of 1;1 :P The r53, with stainless still lines, is still more mushy feel than the F60....it brakes great too but just initial feel is more mushy. So my experience is both...i had the dealer did it on the r53 - brakes line and fluid change so i assume it would be as firm but wasn't. I assumed they bled the brake etc etc...but still mushy as if they did not. i planned re do it myself this summer for the r53 to see if there is a difference. Let us know how it goes with the dealer job.

Yep easy flush, i used the schwaben tool and hooked it up to the master reservoir and pushed it out. Used the Ate fluid type 200.

That Schwaben system I bought from ECSTuning makes it so much easier and FASTER! It paid for itself after one caliper was bled...

You can do it yourself.
A month ago, I did it myself.
Follow some safety rules!
