Suspension DOT Brake Fluid
DOT Brake Fluid
My 2008 Mini Cooper S R56 maintenance warranty is over and I will flush the brake fluid. I would like to know what DOT version (DOT 4 or 5.1) and quantity is required. Also, what brands are recommended.
Thanks.
Thanks.
That link is actually for power steering fluid.
I assume you mean this?
ATE® PERFORMANCE BRAKE FLUID
ATE® Super Blue or ATE® TYP 200 Amber
Both are DOT 4

The link says
Personally, I wouldn't trust the claim that this deluxe fluid is good for three years instead of two. But the price isn't really high, so why not? The dual color feature is nice but any fool can identify two year old brake fluid on sight. It's just for "racers" who change their fluid before it starts to look nasty.
I'm generally a big supporter of government regulation, because I think it can be an effective way to solve problems. In certain cases, government is the best solution. But asinine laws like that are just the sort of thing that make people think government is the bogeyman. Don't get me started on Florida...*
The liter size of that ATE colored fluid is a big disadvantage. It takes almost one liter, or sometimes a little more, to do a flush. If you crack open a second can and use just a little, you can't keep it around for 2 years and then use it. It goes bad too fast by absorbing moisture, and there's not much you can do to stop it. Huge waste. I prefer 8oz or 12oz bottles of good old standard DOT 4 (hopefully bought on sale an the local auto parts store) and then if I have to open one and use only a bit, I waste hardly any.
But that said... Ooooh! Colors! I know which one my 3 year old would pick.
*Note: I'm TROLLING here. It's a little troll. Just having a bit of fun. I don't actually mean it. Please don't start a flame war. Thx.
One can should be enough for a complete MINI brake system flush, but we recommend two cans in case you have persistent bubbles.
Florida State Law prohibits the use of BLUE brake fluid.
