Pops and Bangs

Hey all,

I have a 2020 Countryman S (non all 4) in BRG with black stripes and roof

When I did the test drive before buying i heard pops and bangs in the same model.

Now I am about 1000km in and whilst I love the car I cannot hear any pops and bangs even with Sport mode on and sports transmission.

Any ideas?

AJ

It will ONLY Pop and Brurble in SPORT MODE. You will need to move it to manual drive and downshift coming to stops and you will hear the pops and burbles

Thanks for the response, really appreciate it.

Any way of increasing it by a tune or chip? Something like racechip?

I have a 2020 countryman S fwd in the US. I haven’t heard any in sport mode yet, which is kind of disappointing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Hopefully they haven't removed them between the FY19 and FY20 cars....

Mine was built Dec19.

mine was also built Dec 19.

I had a ‘17 that was a lease before this, and it would pop and bang a ton. A bit bummed out my ‘20 doesn’t do it, especially because I bought this one. I emailed Mini about it, but haven’t gotten a response yet.

Please let me know when you hear back and then I might reach out to Mini Aus.

I tried downshifting manually on sports mode today and no luck at all.

Is there a need to break the car in a little more? I am up to 1200-1300km. Was told that I should use a light foot for the first 1000 before going a little harder, as always wait for it to be nice and warm.

Sorry, I missed that you were in Australia. Do Australia's emissions laws now require a GPF/OPF by any chance? RealOEM has 5 market variants for the FWD Cooper S produced in 12/2019 and I'm unsure of which spec the Australian model is built to. They have EU, USA, IDN, IND and MYS variants. The USA versions is the only model using the B46, the other 4 all use the B48. But I was under the impression the high sulfur content fuel used in Australia was incompatible with the current gasoline particulate filters, maybe your dealer can advise as to if you have one. If you do though, the pops and bangs aren't coming back with it in place.

Hey, thanks for the reply, no particulate filter here and we get the 141kw Cooper s with DCT. I believe it's the B48

Wink 2020 JCW USA owner here: they do exist!

USA owner here.. now at 8,000 miles on my 2020 JCW Countryman ordered in Nov 2019. Burple and pop shows itself starting around 300 miles. I videod my exhaust the first 2,000 miles every few hundred miles to get an idea on the exhaust breakin. We do have both pops and burples on the USA 2020 JCW Countryman but the way you initiate it and how it works while driving is much different. much more subtle, if even any pops when driving in sport mode and just letting off of gas (like in prev Fxx and Rxx; i could put in sport manual auto and then bring to 3,300 rpms and let off gas and have the nice burple and pops). now its more on the downshifts. esp from say 4,500rpms in 5th to 5800rpms in 4th (the sport shift mode (when you push it over in sport mode but don't drive it in auto manualy) IS CRAZY aggressive and will hold revs quite high).

so in park revving; TONS of burple and pop.

driving; great sounding exhaust overall, will get burple and pops on hard accelerations and esp when it shifts; seriously feels like a kick in the *** when you floor it.. loves!! some pops when downshifting and engine is nice and warmed up and also some run off pops/burples too at lower non-aggressive modes.

i've been trying to figure out how to really be able to get it to pop like the Pro Exhaust on prev F60s w/JCW Exhaust.. i'm def in line for either a tune or new exhaust or even removing pieces from exhaust

here a playlist of all of my 2020 JCW Countryman vids i've posted to youtube (there are ads and i'm not a very good youtuber either!!) if your curious about the exhaust sounds and how it matures at least on the 2020 JCWs in the USA.

They didn't seem to give a good answer on it. They thought I was saying sport mode wasn't working. Pretty useless. The guy at the dealer said it was pretty normal and can take 5-10k miles to start waking up.

i'm at 8,300 miles and yea.. exhaust sounds great; def less popping.. after you hit 2,000 miles exhaust matures. however i would really recommend turning off ASD so the noises are all real vs piped in when in sport modes

I can't imagine they changed the tune to make things more aggressive in the later model years, but maybe they did. It should just be put it in Sport mode, give it some gas and let off.
