Navigation Map Update?

Hi,
Has anyone updated their North America EVO navigation maps yet from a source other than the dealer? (or gotten a free map update from the dealer?) On Ebay, I see navigation updates for versions PREMIUM, NEXT, MOVE and MOTION, but none specify the NBTevo system that the F60 has.

It's not very important but I figured when 2018-1 version comes out soon, I may want to upgrade. (Currently, North America EVO 2017-4 is the latest map version available, with 4 referring to 4th quarter of 2017, not April 2017)

Thanks
-Jason

Success! I updated from Road Map North America EVO 2017-1 (111162.3.213) to Road Map North America EVO 2018-1 (111173.3.212) on my 2017 F60. No FSC code is required. You only need to obtain the ~27GB of nav data on a USB stick so don't waste your money on an FSC code that is tied to your VIN.

I can also confirm this works. Used the NORTH AMERICAN EVO 2018-1 to update a 2017 Countryman that had the 2017-1 maps from the factory, no fsc or BMW code required, just a 32 GB fat32 formatted USB stick. It took about an hour and 15 minutes to perform the update, so just went for a drive.

It's different from NEXT on F56, I believe those would need FSC code. EVO systems do not (I'm not sure if it's unlimited time or for the first 2-3 years like BMW.)

Search Google for "Road Map NORTH AMERICA EVO 2018-1" I found the maps through a different UK based forum. Google is always the answer.

Thanks! Good to know, I just bought the car last Thursday, and it's still on 2018-1, gonna call the dealer to make sure all software are updated.

How did you find out this information? I've called two local dealerships and MINI customer service line, and so far no one willing to provide what's the latest nav map version available. Since I just bought the new car, would love to have the latest map installed... and 2018-1 seems out of date to me...

As TheJuice said back in Post #7 (https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/f60-countryman-talk-2016/324705-navigation-map-update.html#post4376276):

Change the 1 to a 3, do the Google, and Bob's your uncle.

Mine has Road Map NORTH AMERICA WAY 2018-1, and I can't find anything Road Map NORTH AMERICA WAY 2018-3 related on Google...

I'm unfamiliar with the WAY map. Perhaps it's updated hardware that has enhanced maps or changes related to the MINI connected services. I assume you have a 2019 model since you just got it. Searching google, I see references to 2018-1, but nothing newer for North America or Europe. So it appears that 2018-1 may be the latest for that map.

I updated my EVO map (free from google search, UK based website) to 2018-03. I noticed that the Boston MassPike (I-90) changes due to electronic tolling have finally been updated. It shows each of the e-tolls on the map and the new ramp locations near the Weston Tolls (I-90 & I-95 intersection).

I have a friend who has a bmw new 5 series which has the same maps. I am lucky because he can download the map updates from the bmw portal with bmw manager. So i update after he has done the update.

I have the file downloaded but do not have a 32gb flash drive. Is it possible to use a laptop or external hard drive to do the update?

That's a good question. Here are a few thoughts about possible speedbumps to your question:
1. The laptop may have access permissions issues that prevent the car computer from accessing the drive.
2. The map data has to be at the root level of the drive... there are likely other files/folders at the root level of your laptop, and I'm not sure whether the car computer will become confused by the presence of "extra" files/folders. When I successfully updated my F60 map data recently, I made sure that the flash drive contained only the map data, and nothing extra.
3. I suspect that the USB port is not configured to provide enough power for a standalone external hard drive to run.

Perhaps someone on NAM has tried.

If your question implies that you although you don't have a 32gb flash drive you might own a larger one, that should be OK... I used a 64gb Lexar flash drive to update my maps (and I probably would have tried my 256gb SanDisk flash drive had it not already had other things stored on it that I didn't want to delete).

Maybe if you call Mini Customer Service (if you're in the US it's 1-866-ASKMINI), you might get lucky and get someone who either knows the answer or can get it for you.

Finally, not sure where you're located, but since the flash drive method is the one specified, a reputable 32gb flash drive (say, SanDisk or Samsung) is now under $10 on Amazon in the US.

Data storage has really become inexpensive... here's a comparison for you: the first external drive I bought for my Mac Plus in 1986 had a whopping 100mb of storage and cost me $1200. I bought an 8tb hard drive last year for $370... that's 80,000 times the amount of storage on the first drive. But back then the whole operating system of the Mac Plus fit on an 800kb mini floppy disc. Ah progress.

Lol I agree, thought about that after I posted the message and looked up how cheap a 32gb USB is these days. Thanks much for the thorough response Bob! In my defense, I have 10+ 8gb and under flash drives (get them free thru work) but nothing bigger as I have never needed it. Anyways, I’ll just buy one now that I know how cheap they are (haven’t bought one forever since always get them free)

BTW... not only have the prices come down but so has the size and form factor... Lexar 64gb, $153, 2012 vs SanDisk 256gb, $58, 2018... both purchased on Amazon at a discount off MSRP
Cheers,
-Bob

Thanks for all the tips in this thread.
I just updated from 2017-1 to 2018-4 :-)

Took about 20-25min on my commute this AM to get the update installed. I used a 256GB USB 3.0 drive (
Amazon Amazon
). You have to delete the factory 256GB partition, and create a new 32GB partition and format using FAT32. All works well. It was amazingly easy, as these things should be!

Where did you find 2018-4? Just updated mine to 2018-3, didn't know there was a newer version out!
