Drivetrain RMW Tune in Dallas OCT 17/18
quick last minute thought:
i have stock fuel injectors
is it really VITAL for me to upgrade them pre-tune?
not really wanting to fork over another lump sum,
but any idea what they run and where i can get them on short notice?

My understanding is that with a stock head you will do fine with stock injectors. I think people put 380s in to provide a little wiggle room for extreme conditions (redline revs, poor fuel like in CA, etc.) You should still realize some nice gains from a RMW tune with your mods and stock injectors.
I'm no expert by any stretch. But I would say while it isn't vital, if you decide a few months or a year from now you want to upgrade your injectors, you'll also need to get re-tuned. So if it were me and I wasn't going to kill myself financially over it I would upgrade. Jan can hook you up with the injectors if you choose to get them, at least that's where I got mine.
On the other hand, if you will never be running your car up to redline, then it might be a waste of money. When Jan tuned mine up there last Dec. I was mainly doing it for peace of mind after installing my 16%. The car made 198wHP and only needed a small timing tweek to clean it up. The JCW injectors would have put it over 200wHP because it was running out of fuel at the top. Yeah I wish I would have had them, but like you I didn't want to drop the extra $$$.
Too much hole showing?
Here's the pre tune checklist. After our tuning day we found that the NAPA Belt# 060535 belt was the best for all reduced pulley applications. 15%, 17% and 19%
Jan recommends the Following:
1. Over half the hole showing in the tensioner
2. New plugs , if running more than 17% use NGK -7s or 8s
3. 91 octane gas, Chevron is usually the best
4. make sure your boots on intercooler are not worn/torn/old
5. Make sure you have no check engine lights
6. make sure your exhaust is NOT leaking
7. Clean air filter
8. Enough oil and coolant
9.Non slipping clutch
10. 380cc injectors if 19% or 15/3% or 15/2 or 17/2 etc
If you plan on running your car on the track it's always better to have 380cc injectors over the stockers

Is it possible to have too much hole showing???
I went from just barely a sliver of a hole with my JCW belt and a Madness 15%, to ginormous hole with the Napa 060535 and the same Madness 15%.

I am guessing that after I run it a little and it settles-in that I will have a little bit less, but likely still way more than a whole hole.
Is this too much?
Will I shred the belt?
Can the tensioner do it's job if the spring is compressed this much?
etc., etc.??
Thanks...

That looks pretty good to me, mini_racer. I have a little less, but this could just be normal variation. I have the same setup as you (535 belt, 15% pulley, stock crank).
Thanks for the quick reply Dr. Phil. I will drive it a little today and then snap another pic after the belt has settled-in a bit.
while I do not know if it was slipping before as it is hard to tell if just a little, there is no way that belt will slip now.
Thanks Again...

Dead sexy
A beast indeed, Gnatster how did you chew that belt up so much in only 15K miles? The JCW belt I just replaced at 14K miles looked virtually new. No cracks, and certainly no missing chunks.
535 belt settled on 15% with std crank
Well after only ~20 miles after the belt swap, all seems to be much more settled and now have just barely more than a whole hole.
I think I will have to concur with the experts on the Napa 060535 selection.

Well, just rolled in a couple hours ago from the tune. I must say even though something is still wrong with the car, the seat of the pants dyno indicates improvement was made. Drove home without a hitch. Gnatster, Jan, Intense, Mini-Racer, and Dr. Phil, it was nice to meet all of you. It was a freakin blast riding back from dinner Friday night. Minis ruled the road, for sure. I'd like to put out a BIG THANK YOU to Jan for coming to Dallas and hooking us all up with a tune, and to Gnatster for making it all happen. I hope it was enjoyed by everyone else as much as it was by me. Good times.
For me it's always a pleasure to meet fellow mini enthusaists! It was a pleasure meeting everyone Friday, I wish I could have stayed longer and hung out Sat too. Always a good time hanging out with Jan and everyone at these events.
I would love to give Gnatster a huge shout out for all your hospitality! Thank you for the good times and I hope that I can join you on the track sometime

Jan,
I know I left on Friday with no grin on my face because there was not enough road around the shop for a proper test drive and also the Dyno reading low (or at least lower than what I was expecting).
However as soon as I hit a little bit of open road I was in for a huge surprise...the car was running great...no more choking at high RPMs and the throtle response had improved significantly.
The 9 hrs drive was well worth it. Thanks!!.
And thanks to Nate for making it happen!.
