Just replaced mine on a 16 CMS All 4 at 50k miles. Seems Minis have a tie into the engine computer for battery charging voltage so if you do it yourself you need to reset the computer to tell it the battery is new with a Carly or something similar. The price at the dealer was reasonable at a few hundred dollars.
I just got an AGM battery from Costco, but as MReiland mentioned you'll need someone with Carly or similar to register it. You can drive it without registering it, but don't drive it very long.

I just got this battery light on my 2012 I just bought preowned from dealer...sold as is of course haha.
So-what is this CARLY???
I just bought a Carly, it’s plugs into the OBD port and you can access all kinds of information on your phone or tablet. I use my iPad. I was able to change the signal lane change from the default 3 signals to 5. I haven’t played much more, but there’s a whole lot you can view or change. I give it a thumbs up. Bought it from the manufacturer and it arrived in about a week or so.
There are other ways to do coding but they are much more involved than the Carly, you can use it to reset codes as well as do some mods to the software in the car.

Got it-so can I use the BLUEDRIVER odb to register this battery nonsense? or need Carly?
I'm far from an expert coder but I looked into it after I had a short in one of my license plate lights. MINI (BMW) conveniently shuts off the output but won't turn it back on even after the wiring is fixed without coding. I was able to make it work with some free software from the BMW forums (There are 2 ISTA and NCS Expert) and a relatively cheap USB to OBD cable. Now, the drawbacks to that are that most of the software was in German and there was the possibility you hose up a module because of that. The concept is you get online with the CANbus on the OBD port (For Carly it uses a OBD to BLuetooth Module) then you pick the module you want to update (example the footwell lighting module) you upload the current configuration so you can get back to that point if everything goes south then you make 1 change at a time to module. I updated all sorts of things like Auto-Unlock when you turn the car off, auto lock after 10 mph etc.. You can mess with the bulb out messages if you put in LED lights..
The Battery thing has to do with (my understanding) the alternator putting out a variable voltage, as the battery ages I believe it steps up the charging voltage, but that isn't as healthy for a brand new battery so you use the coder to reset it. If you don't think you will be messing with any of this after the battery you can either see if someone on the forum (BMW included) lives near you and can do it, you can ask the dealer to just reset the code, or you can buy the Carly Dongle and just 1 month of the app and then sell the dongle to someone else. Its possible your OBD dongle is compatible, not familiar with BLueDriver unfortunately.
