Taking panel off over battery

My battery indicator light came on a few days ago and then my 2014 Countryman started to seem like it was powering down in idle. The tachometer goes under 1000. I took the car to the dealership and they wanted to replace the alternator and the battery. The car only has 49,000 miles on it so a new alternator seems like a big fix. I went in to a second shop for another opinion and they said a new battery should fix it. However, the mechanics couldn’t pull the larger panel off. Is that generally hard to pull off? Also, do I really need a new alternator to fix my idle issue?

Probably. MINI batteries tend to have a short lifespan. I doubt the alternator needs replacing though. And yes, that panel should pop off fairly easily.

Taking off the cowl over the battery isn't too bad, though it's kind of tricky the first time you do it. Going from memory:

1. Put a piece of painter's tape on the windshield above and below the passenger side wiper war (makes alignment during reassembly easier)
2. Pop off the passenger wiper arm (wiper removal tool is recommended)
3. Remove nuts holding the cowl on (there are 2 or 3)
4. Remove the gasket running along the front edge of the cowl (goes completely across the engine bay, should just slide off)
5. Slide a screwdriver between the two pieces that the gasket was over and disengage the clips
6. Pull the cowl up slowly and it'll separate from the windshield

You may be able to do it without removing the wiper arm, but I cracked my cowl when I tried that, so I just take the wiper arm off.

This isn't a countryman in this video, but it's the same basic procedure:
