Use and operation of Driving Lamps

I'm looking at a used Countryman that has the Driving Lamps - put on at the factory/port, I believe. I've never had a car with them before.

How are they controlled? Do they come on automatically when the light controls are in a certain setting?

What is "protocol" for using them?

Thanks in advance!

My '14 Roadster S should arrive by Monday. My chrome driving lamps have a separate DL switch on the dash. Protocol? Situational, I guess. Most of my driving will be the daily commute en route to Washington, DC. I'll defer to a MINI enthusiast with greater knowledge and experience.

Just saw on the MINI configurator that they say "They work with the standard high beams and have a separate on/off switch for use at your discretion."

Explains operations a bit more!

In most (maybe all) states, it's only legal to have them on when your high beams are on.

I thought it was just the opposite?

There will definitely be times when I will find their use appropriate. Most of the time, however, they will simply look cool! How's that for honesty?

No. That's why MINI wires them in with the high beams. Other use depends on the state. Public vs private roads, residential restrictions, mounting height restrictions, etc. It's best to check your state laws before you light up the wrong person.

Sorry, my bad. I thought we were talking about the fog lights.

Had them installed by my dealership a year or so ago. Needed to purchase a separate switch which is really part of pc that gets installed/replaced with an illuminated switch, under the steering wheel to the far left. Can only be lite when the high beams are on. The illuminated switch will light up but the lights will only engage with your high beams....
