drinkholder modification works

My wife has to have drinks while in her 2012 countryman chili red s. She doesn't use the connect on the front end of the rail, so I took the two inserts our, used a dremel to cut off the rounded middle piece of the standard drinkholder and IT WORKS! Wife is overjoyed and I am now a hero!

Sounds like he mounted a cup holder in the rail.

Maybe he attempted a idea i mentioned on another thread. the factory cupholders appear to be double walled with the inside coming up and rolling on top to connect to the outside of the cupholder. it could be possible to dremel out the inside layer to make the outside layer the larger size cupholder. a better description would be better if pictures are not possible. surely you have a cellphone with a camera? to add pictured just add images to your computer pictures and where you types in your text, scroll down and see "Additional Options" there you will see "Manage Attachments" thats where you add the pictures from your computer pictures folder. you can only add 3. and they cannot be super good quality pictures due to file size. cellphone cameras are usually not too great of a quality to have issues.

Let me do a better job of explaining! The standard cupholder sits on a plate that attaches to the center rail. Mini put a plastic insert on both sides of the rail in the front so that users would not interfere with the operation of the emer brake. I removed the inserts and than dremeled the outer rounded piece of the cupholder top and bottom and removed the middle piece. Now the cupholder fits nicely in the space between the emer brake and the shift housing. The emer brake can be used with no problem. Wife is still happy!

I understand everything but the dremel. I think you dremeled out the inside of the cup holder so a bigger cup fits. Remember it takes 1000 words to equal one picture and you only at 100.

Are you my husband? I have a countryman and have to have a beverage. ;-)

My cup holders are frustrating!! Tried to use electrical tape to tape the "cup punchers" that are inside the holder down. Aghhhh! Didn't work.

A bit of advice to the op: I read another thread where a person's cup holder leaked--and zapped electrical components underneath. Maybe line your new holder setup with something absorbent. :-)

And congrats on your DIY!!

Must see pics... Cup holders are at the end of the rail, near the controls. Not by the emer brake.

I'm sure he's talking about the movable, rail-mounted cupholders from the back. Through some modifications (I'm not visual, and I've never pulled the rail mounts from their factory positions, so I have no clue how) he's made the cupholder fit on the front section of the rail. A third cupholder in the front, capable of receiving a narrow-bottom 32oz or 44oz cup.

More clarification! Our previous countryman had the full rail that came equipped with the 2 cupholder bases and 2 cupholders. The cupholders had a seam 1/2 inch from the top and another 1/4 from the bottom on the OUTSIDE. If you cut all the way around the diameter at the top and the bottom and than make a cut perpindicular to both cuts the outside piece peels off and that will give you the room to insert the holder on the base and it just fits snugly in FRONT of the emer brake and behind the trans base. It really works!!!!!!!!!!!

If I understand correctly, I think he took one of these and attached it to a rail, except there are some mods made. I just wasn't sure where to cut to make it all work.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

How to easily attach a photo - if you have it on your desktop (your computer's desktop) you can click on the little tiny paperclip option above the window in which you type your answer and "attach" the photo. Or if you use Flickr or something like it you can use the BBcode option to "share" here.

I agree the existing cup holder thingies are not very good. Too bulky and they don't fit some of our fat water bottles.

How do you safely remove the place strip that is in the rail blocking the cupholder from in front of break handle? And i agree, would live to see pics.

Ooh. Very good idea!! I did a DIY with the flat iPhone holder combined with parts from the bmw upright phone holder for the rail. Now I have an upright holder that neither impedes the auto trans shifter nor the ebrake. Sugru is your friend!!

You use sugru to connect the old iphone adapter to new cupholder? Interesting.
