replacing my run-flats

OK....tires have been done like crazy here, but mostly before the Countryman came out.

Looks like I need new tires (only 21K miles Grrrrrrrrrr)

I am going to replace with regular tires. If you've done it, what did you use and do you like them? It seems that the Conti DWS seem to be a good choice, but they don't come in a 205/55R17 (you have to go to 215/55R17) I do live in Michigan so I need all season tires that will do good in snow.

So, please tell me what you changed to. --

I replaced the run flats on my R53 with the DWS's. If you do a search in the first generation section of this website, you will see a lot of discussion about them, with some variable comments. In my case, I liked the good ride comfort, but the rather soft sidewalls made for somewhat squirmy handling when driving them hard. Some of that perception may have been because the run flats I had used before had far firmer sidewalls of course. Winter traction was very good, just as Tire Rack said in their tests. Tread life was good too. Of course the R60 is a different vehicle, so my comments on the R53 usage may be not be completely applicable to the R60. In any event, if you do the search I suggested above you will see a significant variety of comments.

My parents put the DWS tires on their BMW and R56. I had them on an 04 TSX and they are great tires. The sidewalls are a bit soft like some have noted, but they are a reletively light tire to keep your rotating mass down. The things I really like about tire is their traction in all forms of weather, road noise, durability and price. They could have more dry weather grip but these are not summer tires. When I get done with my runflats I will be going with them unless something newer and better comes along. Also 225/50 17 has the same outside diameter as the stock 17 inch tires.

I replaced the Pirelli Cinturato P7 run-flats on my CM S All4 with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. They are quiet, corner well, have great water traction and have worn well...I'd get them again and they normally have a $70 rebate...

Well today I finally did it. The tire store I used was out of the Conti DWS tires, so I went with Michelin Defenders. Yep they got a big upsell, but I'm generally impatient and I decided today was the day for some new ones.

Yep. They are awesome. There is a stretch of road between here and there that was pretty bumpy on the runflats. Taking the same road back was a HUGE difference.

Now I gots to get a slime kit and compressor for under the seat!

If you hate your runflats, change em when you can afford it. BIG DIFFERENCE --

Thumbs up

Congrats Kalamazoo on your new tires! I know how nice it feels to shed your RFs. It puts a smile on my face that tends to scare other motorist on the road when I am driving.

Generally, from my experience, the run-flat tires usually only last me from 20k - 25k miles before you need to replace them. I replaced the OEM Perelli RFs at 25k miles on my 06 MCS, and replaced the OEM Continental Extreme Contact RFs on my 10 JCW at 33k miles. I feel the Continentials held up better, but I knew what to expect from RFs overall.

I've enjoyed replacing my RFs with various Non-RFs and have used the following:

Brigestone Potenza Grid 19 - Summer tire. I tested these on the Dragon. Handled well and quite at first, but extremely noisy after the initial 10k miles. Somewhat disappointing.

Yokohama S-Drives - Summer tire. Handled very well, quiet, pleased with my decision to get them.

Michilen Pilot Sport Plus - All weather tire. Tread very similar to the Conitninental's. Handles well. Ride and noise comfort are great. Extremely happy with my decision to get them.

I am at 9k miles now on my CMS, but so far the suspension on the Countryman is so nice, I almost forget I still have my OEM RFs still on. I look forward to changing mine out too in the near future!

i got the 18" wheels on my cms all4, came with 225/45-18 pirelli p7 summer runflats

looks like i will be down to the wear bars by 12,000 miles or less (1/2 worn at 5,000 when i rotated them)

not really complaining, the tires handle great, dry or wet, just noting i would be very happy if these tires went 21,000 miles

I also went with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. Haven't tried them in the snow yet but in everything else they've been amazing.

Had a loss of tire pressure last night at 2am. No I was not boozing it up, it was after the beat the clock run in Reno (you start running at 1:50am and finish the 5k at 1:20am at a 10 min mile pace )
It's two punctures in six months on the CM. I was going to replace the original tires with runflats at replacement time but now I'm not so sure.

This product was highly recommended to me when I replaced the runflats: www.tyreshieldusa.com. Bought a bottle and the peace of mind. FWIW.

to all ditching runflats and buying a "slime" type liquid flat-fixer, be it the mini branded kit or any other brand

my local independant tire repair store charges $15-$25 to remove a flat tire from the rim, install a plug-patch, remount, balance and reinstall the tire

if there is a liquid type temporary fix in the tire, the price jumps to $100 miniumum (they told me the average is ~$150) because of the mess the goo makes on the inside of the tire and on their tire mounting machine

some tire stores will not patch a tire that has been "slimed" and they also charge extra to clean the mess it makes before they will install a new tire

i carry a Dynaplug kit, the easiest to use tire plug i have ever seen

http://www.dynaplug.com/index.html

instead of a pump, i carry a CO2 tire inflator, the monster air chuck from genuine innovations

http://www.genuineinnovations.com/mo...air-chuck.html

the air chuck comes with 2 CO2 cartridges, but that may not be enough for a car tire, so i carry an additional 8 CO2 cartridges

i am not affiliated with either company, except as a happy customer

i have 3 of these setups, 1 in the mini, 1 in my p/u truck and 1 in my motorcycle, my second motorcycle uses tube type tires, so i carry a spare tube and a CO2 inflator, but no plug kit

Umm, yes please! Where are you?

On my second day to drive, day after the hurricane, car less than 900 miles, I hit a pothole, no TPMS warning
nothing, in the cab, and I even got out and looked. After getting home, the next morning my husband noticed a horrible bulge in
the stock tire. Tire rack and ups saved me and I replaced it for about $130 total.

Tire has nothing wrong except for a three inch cut you can barely see!

Can this be patched?

If you have the stock 17x7 wheels, you could always go wider/lower without sacrificing much comfort....Go from 205/55/17 to 225/50/17, not to mention your choice of tire brands/models is tremendous compared to only a handful that make it in 205/55:
