What's this lens called and can I get a clear/white one?

Hey folks.

What's the official name for the orange lens in the picture? And is it possible to by a clear one to match the clear (white) one used for the turn signal on the S CM (in the scuttle)?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what it is called but, I have seen a member with white/clear ones. So I know they are available somewhere!

Sorry. That wasn't much help, was it!

It's typically called a side reflector. I found white ones years ago when I bought my 330 convertible and again when we got the R53.

I wanted to get them for the Countryman but after contacting the vendor I used for the R53 and looking all over eBay - no luck

Sure! Please post if you strike gold. Regarding the name, in addtion to side reflector, it is also commonly called a side marker.

I believe side marker is the correct term. Instead of a white lens I'd much rather get the entire trim panel from the UK, pretty sure they don't have these lights there...

Oh right. I think these are a US-only requirement.

Replacing the whole panel would be interesting. Sounds expensive though.

On BMWs, many people just paint them.

That's what I'm thinking of doing. What do they paint them with? Good ole' spray paint, or some kind of "tint" spray?

You can call the dealer with the European part numbers and they should be able to order them for you like any other part. You can at least get a quote and see what you think. I checked RealOEM and there are different part numbers for the Euro and US versions, so it's possible that the Euro version comes without a reflector. Can't really tell from the drawings, though.

Can you really order euro parts here through the dealer? That's news to me, thanks! :D

Yes you can order European parts by part number, but it depends on the dealer and even which parts guy you talk to. It also depends on whether the Euro part meets US regulation and since the side marker is a federal requirement, it makes it a tougher proposition.

There are several dealers that do brisk business on this site. Give them a try of your dealer is not cooperating.

I blacked mine out with window film. Easy, reversible, and it blends in, rather than stands out, which a clear will do just as much as amber or red.

I also blacked mine out with the blackout kit that outmotoring offers for like $15-$19.

Hmmm... I like that idea. I'll look into blacking it out.

Cool. Looks much better than bright orange. And the back one looks nice and dark too. I think I'll start with that film and keep pondering other ideas...

Thanks for the pic.

I assumed this was the case as well, but I took a quick stroll through the parking lot at work today and only about 1/3 of the cars had a side marker. Very uncommon on the Japanese and American cars, most common on the German cars. I don't get it.

On my old Nissan and on my Mom's Lexus they were incorporated into the headlight.

OP: try Modbargains, or ECS tuning, or something like that. They may have what you're looking for

As I couldn't find any actual lens replacements, I orded the smoked film from Outmotoring.

This is a DUMB QUESTION, but do these films go on the outside of the lenses? And normal washing won't cause them to peel up?

Thanks.

You should see it in person, the spice orange accents really pop on that nice and clean black. Be jealous you haven't seen it like I have

Fireproof...no these will not peel up from normal washing. Granted I have only had mine on for a month but another friend of mine has had his on for over a year and they are still perfect. Although that is with the ones I ordered from outmotoring. They are a little thicker than normal window tint, so I am not sure about the window tinting and how it last.

Starman...thanks man. It's a work in progress. I wanted something different like everyone and I have always loved the black and orange combo.

Kyle...your just being nice because were friends and I know where you live Just kidding...Thank you!!! LOL!!!!

Things coming down the line for the exterior are...the front JCW splitter (which was supposed to come in last Wednesday but since having a baby last Tuesday, I kind of forgot about that), all gloss black wrapped rings and belt line, black door handle covers and black 4" exhaust tips.
