Y-cable vs Armrest Cradle for iphone?

I've tried to make sense of this based on what's been posted prior, but I can't seem to find a straight answer.

Do both the Y-cable and the Armrest Cradle now do the same thing as far as connectivity with iphone and mini connected, and other features?

I have the Y-cable now, but I hate the cradle you have to sit it in, very cumbersome to get in and out. Can I use the armrest cradle and get the same functionality? It seems that maybe ios-5 changed it so they both operate the same?

Thanks

I'm looking for that answer too.

I have r60 with y-cable, but I don't have the mini connected. Mine is a boost cd.

Does envy one know the answer?

Thanks!

If you are running iOS5, yes
If you had a pre March build date, yes

If those aren't you, then no, the y cable will give some error messages about using the cradle, and only a 3gs cradle is available.

there is no iPhone 4 cradle yet.

You can use the y cable without the rail accessory. I copied an idea from someone else here and made my own holder that fits into the rail horizontally.

without MINI Connected, you already had access to everything it would do, regardless of OS. Not sure how the cradle would work, or even if the hardware is in the arm rest for you. But $250 is a lot for a piece of plastic to hold the phone out of sight.

Thanks for the info. Where did you find instructions on making your own holder?

This is essentially what I copied, but theres lots of other approaches. Some people want the phone within reach and there are mounts that attach to the tachometer, but you would need an extension cable

The Y-cable does all that the armrest does and you don't have to take the iPhone out of its case every time. I added an extension cable to mine and then put the iPhone in the mesh pocket on the front passenger side of the transmission tunnel. Works perfectly and is quick to plug in and store, plus its just enough out of the way that I am not tempted to look at while driving. Just upgraded Pandora today and it works great.

I have a 2' CableJive dockXtender attached to my Y-cable. - Thats what she said!

Kidding aside, this brand works with all the functions and the connector width is small enough to work with most every brand of case.

It came with mine, except a salesman pulled a fast one and switched it to the wrong cable. But my MA figured it out before I took the car off the lot. Not sure if have the Connected or not makes a difference

Don't buy the cradle. It's worthless. End of story.

Unless you consider being tied into the car antenna system a plus for better signal reception. Or want to phone stored in a more secure location or just out of the way.

Is it necessary? Probably not, but there may be value to some people.

The iPhone can't take advantage of external antennas

The Y cable comes with the countryman…at least if you have connected as an option.
I have gone through, tried (3) different cradles. All provided bits and pcs. but none worked as good as the provided Y cable. I took the sunglass holder/rail attachment and adapted it to hold the I phone, fits with or w/o a bumper case. You can remove the insides and the spring so the cover will stay open if need be. Tucked the excess cable under the rail attachment and you would never know it holds a phone. It's there but also hidden if you make a quick stop for coffee, etc. use to keep on the seat or rail..to exposed for me. Plus the less I see of it, less temptation to check emails etc. Only if "Office" would get it's updates…that would allow us to see our calender, appointments, emails etc. through the I phone & mini connected. So far only showing our contacts.
Pictures of the iphone case in my gallery.

I'm not asking about the Y cable - I'm asking about the 2 foot extension cord. I want to be sure to buy the right one.

I read your eyeglass holder idea - very clever - but what did you use to drill the hole in the case that didn't crack the plastic?

Sorry I don't have an extension for the Y cable. I know it's been listed here a few times on what's worked for people. I do know you need a RCA with 3 rings via the 2..the 3rd is for video. I've done a few of the sunglass cases…mainly with a dremel and tips.

Ron..Confused a bit…you have a 2012 with the I phone 4 Cradle…not the base ?
I would think if there out in the 2012's they should be available for others as well.
Was that an option your had when submitting you order…if so what was the addional charge other than, connected, and the armrest with the base ready for the cradle which I have. Thanks for clarifying.

I think what we (I) meant was there was nothing from here in the US or from Mini.
I have seen this and gone to there website, but a few months ago someone on the forum from the UK said that it did not do all the Y cable did. I tried 3 since February when I took delivery and my parts guy has been great about returns. He still says nothing is out there, but did mention they released some new part #'s to do with the cradle, soooooo hopefully soon.
Wouldn't want to spend 200. and change and not be able to return it.
